This would be a first for me. I don't think I've had any ebony FB on anything yet (and that's spanning about 40 years of holding basses).

The sketch I laid out looked like this; remember, I'm recreating a bass that's been in my dreams (not daydreams, but one that's come up regularly and repeatedly when I go to bed at night across a couple months without prompting)...so this is copied from my email:

-Super P/J (5 String)
-Finish (candy dark green, see attached)
-Gloss black pickguard (3 ply)
-Electronics, split coil + FD3 (possible to get push/pull for parallel/series on the pickups?)
-Neck; Maple; Fingerboard:dark rosewood (options on other 'dark' wood: ziricote or ebony), Dots (possibly chrome dots?)

The only changes or add ons I made were suggesting chrome dots instead of traditional (shot down by the shop)...and requesting push/pulls for the pickups to do series/parallel.

Of course in a dream, it's hard to tell wood types, but I'd assume my subconscious was working the 'traditional' rosewood since it was a dark fretboard. Ebony actually is probably a much better fit to what I'm 'seeing' in dreamland, compared to ziricote since that tends to have really pillowy/billowy grain.

My most played Dingwalls have maple boards...this one very specifically does not. Though I don't think that Ebony will sound all that different to my recollection of what it does. This is also what I do to maple boards with some playtime on 'em:

They have. At one point they were GHS and maybe D'Addario in the past too? I was surprised a while back when I tried the steel strings again after having moved from them when the nickel strings were first introduced...For a long time there were only steel strings, and I really thought they were good. When I revisited the newer formulation were really sticky/grabby and I had a hard time playing with them though I liked their slightly less tension. I moved quickly back to the Dingwall nickel wrapped steel

I'm not against it, by any means...But also interested to try ebony and see how it vibes. My first AB1 had a wenge board.

Nah...Haven't seen it come through yet. I just took it out of my checking. :) Besides half the $2400 goes right to my wife for whatever she wants.

Not sure if everyone is up on the current problems builders are having with their supply of ash for bodies, but I have an email in to Dingwall to see if it’s a problem for them or not. My current Super J build is spec’d with ash. Billy at Dingwall is checking with their production manager. I’ll report back when I know more.

I half wondered if it'd impact my Z on order as well. But to be honest, I put very little weight in "tone wood" for solidbody electric instruments. I'm sure if Dingwall has to source something else for my Z, I'll still be just as happy once it's done. They know what they're doing hah.

You got your stimulus money?! I put out a post to my FB circle to see if anyone has received theirs. One guy said it was pending in his account, and a lot of "Nope". I know they said most folks with dd would be handled by the end of this week.

At least I can say I'm aware of someone getting the money. I just want my frickin' bass, which has been in transit for the last two weeks...:banghead::banghead:

One might think that they have a decent stock of ash on hand already. Most builders beyond the 'hobby' level keep a stock of good quality dry wood on hand.

All the same, I went with alder. ;)

So weird. I've been literally building this bass in my mind over the last few weeks as well. Only difference is mine would be Candy Red, with wenge fretboard.

Which fretboard wood did you go with in the end?
