I'm moving back home soon where I won't be able to buy Dingwall/Payson/etc. strings as easily. I'm curious if anyone uses D'Addario/Ernie Ball Super Long Scale strings for their Dingwalls? Looking at the ball end to taper lengths, the D'Addarios (38") and Ernie Ball (38.25") strings seem like they could work for a Dingwall Low B.
The ballend to taper needs to be 39.25" on the B. The only problem with using strings designed for standard scales is that their tensions will become progressively heavier on the lower strings.
Thanks, I underestimated the ball end to saddle length quite a bit! Looks like the D'Addario/Ernie Balls won't do.
As for the tensions, forgive my ignorance but are the Dingwall/etc. strings (specifically for fanned frets) designed to have lower tensions than conventional standard scale strings, even at the same gauge/pitch?
You can order custom made D'Addario strings from Fret Nation, and they'll ship world wide
that's what I'm using right now.
Dingwall strings are designed to have even tension (or as close as possible) across the fretboard. The B has almost the same tension and tone as the rest of the strings for example. This is why our gauges don't line up with standard scale gauges on the lower strings. We've compensated for the extra tension created by the increased scale length by lightening up the gauges on the lower strings.
Standard strings will feel overly heavy on the lower strings and possibly pull the neck into a twist. Not a permanent twist mind you, the neck will straighten out when the tension is released.

Depending on your taste, you may want a gauge higher on the low C, to 0.124. I think the 0.118 would be better.

Wow, Kalium has a different concept of tension and gauge than Dingwall...
According to Kalium:
A set of Dingwall long-scale 5's:

So... who to believe? I have had nothing but Dingwall strings on my Combustions and my Afterburner for years and they have seemed fine to me?
I find Kalium's chart to be the most accurate.

Always get a string set designed for Fanned Fret Basses when you can. As Sheldon stated, you get uneven tone and tension when using a string set designed for parallel Basses. Hard to set your bass up properly if some of the strings are causing a twist in your neck. You can also get note choke on the larger strings with too much tension (string designs in a parallel set).
A LOT more goes into a Fanned Fret Bass String Set than just extending or shortening some of the string’s outer winding.
Use a parallel string set to get yourself out of an emergency jam. Life’s too to short to settle.

Thanks, that would be good. However, with the imminent possibility of getting back to gigging again, there is
no way I can do without my Dingwall whilst having it repaired, that's why I want a new neck.
