I was using the word “internal” in an attempt to succinctly differentiate the relationship of the two coils within a pickup from the series/parallel options on the selector switch. Now I realize it implies not only that the wiring affects the insides of the pickup, but that the point of the connection is also within the pickup. And as you pointed out, it is not.

I’ve seen a lot of confusion about series/parallel within or between pickups on Dingwall basses and thought I had a clear way to explain it. Guess not. :laugh:

But aren’t the pickups generally wired in series in the absence of s/p switches? I’m not aware of any that currently come in parallel, though I’m sure they’d do it on request for a Canadian bass.

Before owning an import this was something I thought about but now I'm an owner, I'm extremely impressed with everything about it especially the set up so I have changed my mind about doing any hardware exchanges now.
just to satisfy my curiosity, can I ask what your reasons for wanting to do these exchange/upgrades are? Thanks!

The closest you'll get is having your pickups wired internally in parallel then using the parallel-neck-bridge setting on the switch, or bridge solo'ed. If your pickups are wired internally in series it's probably an uphill battle.

Yeah I'm thinking about whether it makes sense to open it all up.
Or change the pickups altogether.

In my experience dingwalls are a very coherent package where everything works together, and I'm afraid changing things will mean a lot of effort and not necessarily a better end result.

The older square pickup models you might need to unsolder something, but on newer 2x and 3x switches they have screw terminals, so it is very easy.

Blame my OCD ;) I'm a tinkerer by nature. No complaints about any of the hardware. I'm changing out the FD3s for FDVs as I'm looking to get some more mid growl. But that's a preference thing. I see that the saddles could be improved by a design such as the babicz saddles. I've read they have no effect on the sound but they do feel better under the palm and are more solid adjustment wise. But again, I have nothing bad to say about the hipshot saddles, it's just my ocd wanting to get the best out of the instrument even if it has little to no effect simply for the peace of mind :D

Peace, brother. :) And tinker to your heart's content - life is short and time flies whether you're having fun or not. I had fun modifying my NG-2. Had a custom pick guard cut for it, swapped out the tuners for black HipShots, replaced the stock knobs with Canadian knobs (eh?), snagged one of the last-remaining black four-string Payson bridges (now unobtanium), and installed FDV pickups (love 'em with nickel rounds!).

Was that bridge a direct replacement or was drilling required?

Massive tinkerer of my basses and guitars too, I was just curious as to others' reasons and that I was not on my own :D. Nothing like a day or two away from work and a bag of easy enough consumer mods to perform.

The mods you two kindly speak of are along the same as I am thinking for my NG3. Very nice work on the NG2 friend, it looks excellent.
