Fair point. I think I was annoyed because in a search for a different fretless Dingwall, my bass immediately came up and the first link was his comment.

... Thanks for the nice comment, I appreciate that.
Steven, if you go back through this thread, you'll see a handful of fretless dingwalls posted. Some real beauties.... I'm especially fond of @Flabzilla s AB six and of course my own

I'm very curious about a dingwall fretless. Not sure if long or medium or how many strings.

Pick the scale length that you're playing the most and are most comfortable with. As you've already got that muscle memory in in place. :)

I had the chance to put hands on an NG 6 yesterday.

the neck was awesome. Way nicer on this one then I anticipated. It’s definitely bigger then my Zs of course(different profile spec) but still very comfortable.

killer tone. Great feel. Sooooo tempting to bring home but checks off Zero boxes of NEEDS in my world so I was proud of myself when I was able to leave l and m empty handed. A couple beauty 4 strings too.

Btw..... with the total dingwall convo I thought I’d add that this is the serial number.

Yeah, the necks are very very close to the AB's necks, and all the longer scale Dingwall have very similar carves. There's a little feel difference since the NG/Combustions are a single radius and the Canadians are all compound radius.

Dang it! I wish I could figure out what IDDQD stands for without asking........

This is how you gave yourself god-mode in DOOM and I just couldn't help myself. I see someone else got this reference as there were a number of ID* commands to enable things like all weapons and walk-through-walls mode (clipping). Yes, I'm also old.

I really wish I had a shop where there were Dingwalls hanging around. That's awesome!

Ah. I see. I didn’t often really doom it up. Diabloed a bit, but was more a console king. Halo 2 was one of my ultimate favs... of course following the goldeneye era. Seems so long ago.

I’ve been fortunate to try a lot of ding walls over the years at the local l and m.
It’s allowed me to compare a ton of different necks, especially on the production lines.

They are pretty close for sure. I’ve played some combustion necks that I’d venture could even be as good as some ABs I’ve played but definitely some others not so much.

Ive been curious what to expect from the 6 string in-particular and this one is a win. I find it was very easy to notice the single radius in comparison to the compound radius necks but I do think with the added fingerboard Mass it makes it more obvious. Less obvious on a 5 or 4

Comparing it to a Z neck makes it quite obvious that it is a different model with different specs But standing on its own it’s a superb piece of equipment.
The only neck type I haven’t put hands on now is a 5 string Droc.

they all inspire so differently.

I believe the current issue Combustion/NG's are all the same for a number of years now. They may be different on the older ones, but my 2018 NG and my 16 Combustion have identical necks.

The profile spec is continuous through the years from my understanding but the actual feel is different from bass to bass Wether the fretboard is slightly thicker from one neck to another or the variance on the actual neck just happens to be pushed to the limits on one unit compared to others, I’ve had probably a minimum now of 30 different combustion necks(having owned at least 5) in my hands and some are not consistent to an exact. Perhaps it’s even a bit of swelling. Idk but I can tell you they do vary a bit. Some feel chunky(for a combustion)and it’s rare and most feel nimble and fast

Just because I was curious (and forgetful), I searched for the original post. It was a one-sentence offhand remark from 2017 in a discussion of whether fretless Dingwalls were made. @TheEmptyCell got a single response (essentially: judge not), and then the post seemed to have been forgotten. I know nothing about Steve (@----GODMODE----) other than he lives (or lived) in Regina, has a YouTube channel, his original fretless (the referenced instrument) is a real beauty, he plays well, and that he wasn't part of the original discussion. His user name is a reference to the name of his bass and its technically challenging nature.

@TheEmptyCell seems to be a nice guy with lots of positive posts. I don't judge him by one out of the many. I do understand why Steve would be upset, however. I would think that future communications between the two could be handled on a DM basis.

Nicely said.

Hey guys! I have been seriously considering lately to upgrade my FD3n NG-2 pickups with some Super Fatties II. Has someone here made the Upgrade ? Are Super Fatties considered as better pickups (i.e. Clearer, more dynamic, etc) when compared to the FD3n? Is it worth it?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers

My understanding is Super Fatties II are basically overwound FD3. Which means they should be - well - fatter, and also slightly more compressed. So potentially the opposite of what you're describing (though likely still plenty clear and dynamic - just a little less so).
Now, I don't have real world experience with SFII (but I do with the original Super Fatties, and FD3) so do get a second opinion from someone who does and/or listen to the clips on Dingwall's website.

Hi Dingwall-ers. I am new to here, and would like to send my warm greeting to you guys.
I own a NG3 6string in Swirl Pink, and recently purchased Z3 6string in Tiger eye Burst.
It is interesting that my Z3 is a walnut body instead of the dual swamp ash. And I can't find the option on Dingwall website. Anyone have experience with a walnut body Z3? I am just curios about this.
Thank you.
Cheers.

Welcome, and congratulations on your wise investments. :) I don't have any input for you, but must inform you that pics are mandatory.

This is the Z3 I ordered from Bass Buddha. I still haven't received it though. Wt a gorgeous gear...
And also my pink swirl NG3. But I am planning to sell it to compensate the cost for the Z3...

I find myself back over here in the Dingwall thread (normalcy), as the one I have been active in about the guy getting a note put on his car for loud bass playing from an unidentified neighbor is getting too hot, need to cool off. Anyway, a Dingwall question. I bought a TC Wiretap pedal from Sweetwater and also bought some strings for my Dingwall at last minute, no previous researching. I wanted a little duller, heavier gauge set so I bought the Daddario Nickle EXL160's (50/70/85/105) last minute. So I put them on last night. The E string winding taper at the nut end started just a little bit early and where this string lays in the nut, its not laying with the full diameter of the string, but it *seems* ok. The other 3 strings were plenty long. Yeah, I got the duller sound I wanted but why do I feel like these strings require more tension to fret with my finger and they just don't feel as *spongy* as the stock ones that came on my Combustion. They seem to be just *tighter*. Am I being fooled here? I think I read the the Dingwall strings that come with the bass are made by Daddario, right? Are they constructed any differently with regards to overall tension?

I am not sure that string diameter equates a specific tension. It is one of many factors that includes the material type and the core thickness. The Dingwall strings have been specially formulated for fanned frets for the extra long scale length.

I love the feel of the stock Dingwall strings (compared to what I'm used to playing, the Jackson JS basses). The only way I can describe it is 'spongy' and I really like how the open E string just kinda wobbles, but I don't like the 'twangyness' of the G nor do I like the skinny .045 of the G and I like a more thick E. I like the gauge of the Daddarios I just put on it and I like the duller sound of them but Im not liking how tight they seem. Im outta luck, eh? No real Dingwall strings in 50/70/85/105 ? I will just put my original ones I took off back on then I guess and just never play the G string..lol.. Im believing you when you say a special formula.

So, the mixer we use is the Soundcraft Ui24R. We all have aux-mixes off of that stage box. In a situation where there's a decent (or at least an 'independent' FOH PA, we just in sert it between the stage lines and the FOH snake. They get clean splits with nothing added/done to them to mix as they please. If we're in a room that we need to provide FOH, we just use the main mix on the Ui24R as the FOH mix. We have a 'generic' main mix that can be the starting point for every show as needed. Since the Soundcraft save all your last settings (or you can load previously saved settings if you play a room lots)...it's not really any more work if you're doing your own PA. It also has the proficiency of mix and control as something like the M32/X32 boards for FOH Mixing.

We still do have live amps on stage, but after years of gigs, they're all pretty well dialed in.

On the Drum thing...in a room that we reach where the 'house' sound says "Oh we don't really mic drums here" or even only mic one or two pieces. We have a few strategies. First off is that we can just put an overhead on the kit and just use it for the IEMs. Or if we want we can do overhead-kick or overhead-snare-kick. Though honestly kit is loud enough on stage that many nights I'm not doing more than just a little hat and kick.
Been using the UI24 for a while now for the same purpose. Really wonderful amount of bang for the buck with that one. And I too only add what I need in my ears. Get a lot of drum bleed with five open vocal mics, so other than kick and snare, I usually leave the rest of the drums alone.

Maybe try putting the B-E-A of the original set and the D-G of the new ones?
