The thing to do (for those playing along at home) is to BUY EARLY & LOW...so which models are currently undervalued?!?! Those won't be soon. They never are. I'm lookin' at you D-Roc and now out of production D-Birds...

People would weep if they found out what the cost of the Rastaburst was...and that my Voodoo Prima cost less than a Combustion does now.

Possibly, I don't recall a count. There are some others who have more than a handful too. I think Mark down it Texas does, etc. and there's a few guys from the wayback who aren't here on TB as well. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some foreign collectors beyond Ed, as well. In the end, I've never really thought about it as any kind of competition. Buy the ones you like, and enjoy them.

A good friend of mine suggested once that you could have the world's best comic book collection...and it would fit into the pocket of a briefcase. Sometimes its not the quantity that counts.

the problem, at least for me, with these basses is every time I pick up a Canadian made, it has a voice, similar to some others maybe but IME a unique voice. I guess this makes them addictive. If they all sounded and felt the same then it could be less enticing I suppose but when you have generations of supers with different wood combos throughout and different models and flavours of long scales as well it may become a personal competition but perhaps more of a quest to explore the variety. And then there is the feel!!!! And then the Beauty!!!!
Such an addictive force. One that does transcend dingwall but still, Dingwalls are like bass Crack!

The danger of the classifieds and the privilege I’ve had of local availability becomes perhaps a bit of a gluttonous quest!! It’s like having access to a gourmet buffet! A delicious array of flavours and textures.

It seems you’ve also, in recent years, gotten a desire for the dingwall buffet! Hehehe. You just have a respectable amount of self restraint!

Yeah, there's a few specific ones I'd like. Ed's Brazil (aka Snotburst), he's also got an uber-Z with ultra complex electronics that would be fun to play with. I'd like to replace my mid 2000's AB1, either with another Whalepool burst or one of the red/amber-bursts. I'd like the single AB-0 that's out there somewhere. And the only other thought I have is another fretless, but a shorter-scale model.

Even Ed the other day mentioned that he really plays 5 or 6 of his regularly and the rest very occasionally and he's even thinking of eventually downsizing a bit. As always, there's a handful of interesting ones out there. The reality is that I'm a player more than a collector, so having many more than I do doesn't make too much sense. The others all have a specific niche. The NG3 is the sacrificial lamb, that takes the slings and arrows of the road, the Rastaburst will always be an iconic instrument and a piece of me. The fretless...is fretless. And the Voodoo Prima is somewhere between museum piece and problem child. I need to get someone to work on it, possibly re-fret it and see what we can do to drop the action from merely 'medium'.

It's true! When I think back to what I paid for my ABI and what they are going for nowadays, I did well. I occasionally contemplate downsizing and then think at what it would cost me to replace something I sold and I'd rather have the bass. In any case, if I follow the Marie Kondo method, they all spark joy when I pick them up (even the non-Dingwalls)!

The collector side of me wants a piece of dingwall history but the realist knows(assumes) I’ll prefer to have a few players. When finances get more flexible I seem to acquire some extras out of curiosity or lust but then when things tighten back up I liquidate the ones that mean less to me for one reason or another. It’s mostly other brands (often of less value) that come and go just as I always wanted to try “that one” and with that only ones that are prices to not lose on it I resell. I’ve had to make some tough choices on which ones to let go of and that’s left me in a spot where each one that I have now are incredibly valuable to me in one form or another.
I do have hopes to one day recover an SJ I foolishly sold and then I would be willing to part with the one I have now.

I do love going into L and M though and just feeling out the selection that comes through..... the odd time one really tests my will power and sometimes even breaks it. I’m really glad the purple 6 NG2 I just posted a few pages back is on its way to its new home..... the temptation was strong with that one.

I’ve had to make some tough choices on which ones to let go of and that’s left me in a spot where each one that I have now are incredibly valuable to me in one form or another.

That’s unfortunate. They have a pretty great staff here, some have become solid friends, and often cool stuff to “look at” ..... and possibly bring home. I think our local L and Ms here are pretty great.

I feel like I tortured @Applejacks with one in particular for a while as I hummmed and hawed, then almost committed, then flaked. Poor guy, but he eventually locked it down and it then enabled me my first P which I have become absolutely smitten with.

As for the walnut it is a spec option if selected. Not common on the Z series but absolutely a fantastic option. My only experience with walnut bodied Dingwalls are on my first AB2 and a beauty of an SJ. I really appreciated both of those instruments but I'm not financially set to keep them all and prefer the neck of the 6 string Zs.

Looks like its a wenge Fretboard and is it a wenge neck as well or blackout out maple?

I was having a similar dilemma with my SJ. I currently prefer the long scale still but thought after I didn't gravitate to the SJ for a while that perhaps ill just save it for later in life when my busted up shoulders finally cant do the long scale anymore..... then id have my retirement bass in hand already.

I got past that mindset and figured it just needed a more suitable home but not long after that I then came around to the notion that I missed the alternate inspiration it provided me.... Anyways, it became my biggest regret but I did find myself with an alternative. Shoulda,coulda, woulda.


Thebn when I got my fretless my intent was to be down to 2 basses. one fretted and one without....

Then I saw a deal on a cheapo bass.... then I wanted a jazz back...... then I wanted to explore the spector sound.... then curious about headless.... and then and then.....
