For those interested from a few days back, here's Everything You Wanted To Know About Dingstrand Nordwall NordyMutes (But Were Afraid To Ask) (tm). These are a bit pricey compared to your average dish sponge, but they look nice, they're more adjustable, and they seem to be well-made so I expect it to hold up for a long time. It's one way to get that vintage-ish plonk-y sound that works in a lot of older songs, and as a bonus covers up a lot of mistakes if you play a little sloppy. Not that I would know, of course! Just a fun sound to work with even with newer songs, IMHO, and I'm sure opinions differ.

The mute is made to rest right at the bridge, with slots at the same angle as the bridge. But hey, enough of my yakkin'! Here's some pics and I also made a video demo () if you want some audio samples.

I'm barely a bass player. You could ship them to me.

I know the person who owned this originally - he is extremely careful with gear - it was/is brand new condition - unless some muck played it at the store and marked it. It is STUNNING in person too! - prob my FAV looking Dingwall ever.

If I'm not mistaken, I got an SJ(P) from him. It’s way older and I couldn't say enough good things about it’s condition.

That's a whole lot of distorted bass! Surprisingly, Nolly was only one of two that wasn't.

Thanks! I picked it up in late August but never did a NDD post because I was too busy woodshedding it for an outdoor gig on Sept. 4th! I'm not sure about the NAMM provenance (interested to hear anything you know about it), but it's from 2015 and yes it was in the classifieds from user @jakka1 here (No longer available - Dingwall AB-1). Unfortunately I missed it on TalkBass and found it on Reverb. He priced it very fairly IMHO but I also got hit with a lot of Reverb sales tax... d'oh!

But, I'm REALLY happy with this bass, definitely getting close to my ideal. From the minute I plugged it in I had a love-at-first-sight feeling, this is "my" sound, which TBH is something I didn't experience with my previous two Dingwalls (an NG-3 5 and SJ 5). Love the fiesta red, don't mind the tort pickguard (the "Pino Palladingwall look" LOL), the string spacing is perfect, the passive electronics are easy and plenty beefy for what I do, the wenge neck feels both luxe and snappy, and it didn't have the one AB-series deal-killer for me, which is the area at the base of the neck, near the pickup, showing light natural wood (those look unfinished to me, but hey if you like that kind of thing many are gorgeous). I had switched to almost all 5-strings but this one has me loving 4-strings again. Everyone talks about the 37" B but let's not forget how amazing the 36.25" E string sounds either!

I'm glad that you're digging it! In his ad here, @jakka1 did mention that it was a NAMM bass and that it was one of the very few Afterburners with a pick guard...

Yep, almost certainly the same bass! What can I say, I can't pass up a good rarity. I gotta get out more, that bass has been to more countries than me since 2015.

My first with luminlay too - my eyes bugged out when it got pitch-black at that first outdoor gig and I realized I could see my dots. A must-have for all future basses (and maybe a retrofit for existing ones too).

do you mean fingerboard? It has a maple neck. Normally I’d agree as I love maple FBs but I’ve been rocking a beat up old fender p with a rosewood fb lately and it seems to work beautifully for the old beater.

edit: going for that vintage traditional sound of course.

It is the same bass and was previously owned by @Waltsdog. Maybe you got it confused with my old SJ that actually was a NAMM bass? I don't recall ever thinking this AB-1 had that distinction.

Hello! I realize this is a stretch in the current situation, but I'm looking to get a Dingwall and was hoping someone in the Southern Maine area might have one I could try out.

From research, it seems to tick all the boxes but I’d really like to play one before I move forward.

It is the same bass and was previously owned by @Waltsdog. Maybe you got it confused with my old SJ that actually was a NAMM bass? I don't recall ever thinking this AB-1 had that distinction.

More likely a false memory. I have those occasionally.

My new Dingwall was finally shipped on the 3rd, hopefully receive it this week, fingers crossed. Been a rough 15 months lol.

Ye meant finger board, I just love the look of it much better than the darker woods.
