It's been years since Sheldon told the story, but here's what I remember. Some details may have flexed during the intervening time.
One of Sheldon's customers/friends back in the tech and repair days came to him with this Yamaha BB series with a mission to downsize it. He took to it with a french curve and reshaped it until ending up with what is the 'original' Voodoo body shape. The headstock was also carved back to make it smaller/shorter and the tuning heads re-positioned. Flame maple veneer then added to cover the work.
A live stream with Sheldon being shown all these old basses just to hear his stories and reactions would be absolutely fantastic.
I remember all these pictures, but I don't have them all saved. I guess I have been a Dingaholic for a long time now!
I keep finding more and more reasons to copy your exact build...

But the magnitude of changes is still impressive.
Also that super proto with an ab head does not look bad at all !

I think there was some utility (how do we shave down the body size and weight) and still work with what we have situation but the end result was what would become known later as the Voodoo.

I find both pickups are usable but also in the series mode, you get something that's a little closer to the series Dingwall sound that is often a winner for many people. That said, I do use the split coil neck pickup 90% of the time on this bass. I didn't feel like the FDV could 'keep up' with the signal hotness of the P pickup and I thought it sounded anemic on it's own by comparison to the P pickup. My argument would be that the FDV works best when you're using all FDV's in an instrument.
Apologies up front: I tried searching a couple ways but wasn't finding what I was looking for. Probably didn't word it correctly, so if the topic has been covered and there's a post you can point me to I'd be grateful! Now, to my question :
Is the tone of a neck position NG2 or 2x Combustion pickup similar to the "P bass" tone on an NG3 with Dbird switch? That's probably the most used position in my NG3 4 string but I'm thinking about getting a newer 5 string Combustion or NG with two pickups. I don't use the all pickups on setting, it's just not my thing.
The other thought is swapping the pickups on my older Combustion to FD3N'S. I believe I read here they fit in the square/EMG style housings, so maybe that would get me closer to where I want to be tonally.

NG2 neck pickup and the D-Roc middle pickup should both have their outputs wired in series so should sound identical. The neck pickup on a Combustion will sound a warmer due to it's neckward position.
FD3N's are a pretty big step up from the original FD3A's.

The neck pickup (series wiring) on my NG-2 sounds like a BIG p-bass with attitude to me.
Same on my maple Z.
@Sheldon D. do you think you’ll ever make a 6 string P pick up?
Are the current Combustions routed so one could move the neck pickup to the middle position, or is that only the NG2's?
If the FD3N's fit inside the square end housings I'm definitely interested in swapping that out.
Both the current combustions and current NGs are routed for 3 pickups, so you can do that with both models. You cant buy an NG2 shaped pickguard though, have to pick up a used one or get one made.
That's a good question. We haven't had enough people ask to push it to the top of our R&D list. Maybe in the future though.
