It's bit more than 'slight' for the series middle/bridge. It tightens up the overall feel of the tone, and you can then EQ in any perceived loss of lows (which to me was minimal, more a sense of it being a bit clearer).

The only reason that that bit on the end of the horn doesn't look quite on is that the pickguard in that picture wasn't fully in place, as I hadn't sanded the guard around the neck pocket & at the pickups where it is the tightest. The shape is identical to the other 2 and matches up 100% with the original pickguard.

Hey guys! I just bought an older, I believe V1, 5 string Combustion the other day. I haven't taken delivery of it yet, and it is my first Dingwall so I'm a bit new to all of the iterations and changes over the years - but I've VERY excited to be able to officially join this group shortly.

Please forgive me if this has been answered many times already - this thread is over 1900 pages deep and I'm doing my best to search it and not post redundant questions, but there's a lot here! The bass is solid red, no pickguard, at the moment which is not a color I particularly care for, so I will be repainting it for sure. So, a few questions I want to research before I get it and start taking things apart:
- I'm assuming this has the FD-3a pickups in it now. Should I see about getting B Booster, or is it worth the upgrade to the FD3n's?
- If I do upgrade the pickups, are they available in the rectangular shape?
- Where would you all recommend sourcing a pick guard for the V1's from? I've seen some people have done it, but most things I'm finding want you to trace your existing guard and send it off (not an option in my case)
- Lastly, if I wanted to do something nuts like add a 3rd old style pickup, can the body be routed to accommodate that cleanly and is there a pickguard available for that layout - again with rectangular pickups?

Most likely, I'll probably just repaint and try to buy a stock pick guard that fits, but if I have to take it apart to paint, I might as well consider the other options and upgrades.

@Bozendoka did you leave the shims, and which alumitones did you get? Do you have any sound samples out there?

@djaxup thank you! I like green so I had to jump on it :D

It's a tricky one to photograph (with a phone) and capture the color. That picture is fairly close but in person it almost seems slightly more yellow.

Beautiful bass! Congrats! I'd think twice about a 3rd pickup and/or pickguard as it looks fantastic as is!

That reminds me of a hotwheels truck with the rubber tires that haunts my memories. I really like it. Congrats

your routing would be tricky to add the 3rd pick up. I think your neck pup would have to be moved forward and with that you’d have some excess routing on the where the bottom corner of the old pick up sat. No biggie really if your covering it with a guard but I do think that’s what you’d be looking at. As for getting a tracing, this room may be your best option for finding someone who can get you what you looking for or maybe the Facebook club. I’m not certain on this but perhaps a later model combustion guard will even fit your bass. Maybe @BurningSkies has his old guard still to slap right over your pick ups as a template or at least a tracing of it

It was very common to have those shims. A couple of my older ones did too!

edit: i also ended up removing the shims and that was with tapered strings installed.

If going the 3X route (and rout) you'll want to consult with Jeff Roller on that, and he probably can provide a template for the guard.

If you're keeping the standard combustion layout, I DO have the original guard from mine which I'm happy to provide a trace/scan but you'll want to confirm with the shop that the layout hasn't changed between the v1 Combustion and the v3, which is what mine is. If things didn't move, then it would be easy to do.

Thanks! I'm super happy with how it's turned out. I love the gold on black look and of course the sound. The one thing I'm unhappy about is the matte finish chips really easily. I'm considering having it refinished next year after I get my D-Roc Standard and possibly swapping the pickups for some Q-Tuners I have in another bass. I just can't leave well enough alone :D
