Had my matte Combustion for about 5 years with medium use and the chipping got to me so bad that I had to have it refinished. I used to have the same scheme as you, black with gold hardware but with a maple board and gold pickguard. Now I have all black hardware.

Awesome! I'll keep you in the loop when I actually have it in my hands and confirm which generation it is. I had a friend of mine in NY pick test it and pick it up for me as there is travel restrictions to and from MA right now and I couldn't get down there myself. I might still be a couple months before I actually have my hands on it. In the meantime I'm just dreaming and scheming of colors, pick guards, and other potential upgrades.

The bass is solid red, no pickguard, at the moment which is not a color I particularly care for, so I will be repainting it for sure. - I'm assuming this has the FD-3a pickups in it now. Should I see about getting B Booster, or is it worth the upgrade to the FD3n's?
- If I do upgrade the pickups, are they available in the rectangular shape?
- Where would you all recommend sourcing a pick guard for the V1's from? I've seen some people have done it, but most things I'm finding want you to trace your existing guard and send it off (not an option in my case)
- Lastly, if I wanted to do something nuts like add a 3rd old style pickup, can the body be routed to accommodate that cleanly and is there a pickguard available for that layout - again with rectangular pickups?

Most likely, I'll probably just repaint and try to buy a stock pick guard that fits, but if I have to take it apart to paint, I might as well consider the other options and upgrades.

The FD3n's are a worthwhile upgrade. FD-3a are more traditional sounding and are okay, but the FD3n's brought the bass to life. I got a set with the P-Tone in the neck. They're more expensive, but I gravitate more towards P sounds than J, so it was worth it for me. I think the regular set would be fine too.

Interesting to see Alumitones in there. I have another bass with those (Aluma Bass Bar's) and they sound great.

Any idea on when they switched over from A to N on the Combustions? I don't plan on messing with mine, given the complex multi-preamp/wiring scheme I have, but always interested to know.

Could it have been when they went to the rounded shells? The most recent version of the Combustion I have played was v.3, which was still fairly similar to my v.1. The neck profile had changed a bit and the colours were different, but that's about all I can remember.

I do believe it was a fairly recent transition 2018 NAMM maybe?

Nah, not really. Just unpacking the control cavity to get at the switch on the Uber-Combustion Fretless is an undertaking. It's got not only the original pickups but each bridge saddle is a piezo pickup with associated wiring, then it has 6 knobs, 4 switches, and 2 preamps. I don't open it up and play with what's inside lightly.

I'm not too afraid in general to do this size/level wiring work but...The switch is one of the non-clamp-mount switches so it'd be a fiddly situation to get to it, unsolder and re-solder. So yeah, I'm pretty happy with the setup as it stands now. If I were to do it, I'd probably dodge a bullet by snipping the pickup wires and splicing/soldering away from the switch.

And none of this is to say ANYTHING bad about how it's currently wired. It was done by Mo, and it was a miracle that he managed to fit everything that needed to be in that compartment. He managed to do a very complex and custom wiring job (even corrected the original preamp wiring scheme and let the company who published it know it was wrong); added 3 switches and a second rotary knob to the setup in a way that's easy to understand and coherent to use while playing.
