Super P5 w/ a pair of splits, nothing specific beyond that in terms of placement, orientation or wiring.

why not go with the PJ but with a p-tone in the bridge position like @BurningSkies has, won't have the look but the sound should be what you're after.

I didn't even know that the P/P was an option or I might have done it. Though the P-Tone is probably close enough for me and maybe has a bit of flexibility to it.

What I'm having a hard time deciding on is what model to get. I've narrowed it down to the d-roc vs the ng series. I really don't use active preamps and would likely disable it mostly on the ng or normal combustion model, so I picked the NG out of those 2 since I like the white color the best.

I'd go D-roc if I were you, sounds great, looks great, already passive.
If you go the other way why even consider paying the extra for NG over a combustion? Most of the price difference is the preamp you'll be switching off. Keep an eye out for an older combustion 4 in white.

It’s not an option unfortunately for me. It would probably be tight, maybe reverse P’s would fit easier, not sure.

Before I got the P, I'd been doing 5-8 hours a day on the Fretless from March onward. I've gotten to a place where if I don't play it for a few days I still can pick it up and feel 'on' so that's progress. They both have their own pleasures and charms.

that they do. Not being one to utilize time well I find my unstructured practices a random selection depending on the day or urge.... usually urge.

Yea, for sure. My “fantasy thought” was to go reverse, right up against each other, nudge them toward the neck a tad and somehow wire it to be able to utilize the bass coil of the neck and treble coil of the bridge to “lock-in” a “traditional” P sound as one of the options.

...Now Obviously that would probably require re-engineering of the pups on top of a whole bunch of other ridiculous re-tooling but I like to dream big sometimes.

@Challanger2 From what you're saying I'd go D Roc. Nothing against the Combustions or NG's and I have one of each. If you know you'd never use the preamp, save yourself some knob space and cash!

You could likely be very happy with either but listening to that tone you're shooting for I would either go NG2 or Droc (not NG3). The reason is for that tone (lots of mids/high mids) you'll probably live on either the bridge/middle in parallel or middle solo settings. Those are 2 of my top used settings, especially for that great rock tone you referenced.
For reference I have a 6 way switch and 3 pickups in my Z3 so I have basically all of the NG3 and Droc options and at least on my bass that would get you what you want. That tone is basically a Geddy Lee type tone so you may be able to pull it off with the bridge and neck in parallel but not as well imo.

There are many here more knowledgeable though that will probably offer up other suggestions also.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, seems like the D-Roc is the clear choice. Now I just have to decide between the black or natural wood finish, they both look amazing in stock photos.

I mean, if you're concerned with the weight of your hardware, I feel like it's my duty to point out that there's a good way to shave off a decent amount of weight. He's also do wolfram, intermet, nitronic and a material called 'physics' that I don't have any information on but is described as working well with magnetics...
