Not sure this is the right place to ask, but I'm debating getting a dingwall for my next bass. I'm thinking of getting a 4 string, as my band tunes to D Standard/Drop C, so the low B (or A in this case) would never get used. My current band mainly does hard rock/metal covers (metallica, megadeth, ozzy, pantera, avenged sevenfold, basically older or current metal with no screaming vocals). Here's a recording we did of a cover of blink-182 for reference (bass was DI'd and tone applied by the band member mixing it. It sounds good, but its not my normal tone).
What I'm having a hard time deciding on is what model to get. I've narrowed it down to the d-roc vs the ng series. I really don't use active preamps and would likely disable it mostly on the ng or normal combustion model, so I picked the NG out of those 2 since I like the white color the best. I really like the look of the d-doc (I don't mind the ng appearence, its like 10/10 visual rating for the d-roc and like 9/10 for the ng), but there's far fewer videos of d-roc on youtube compared to the ng series. So I'm not able to get a great idea of what it sounds like, especially as a good chunk of the d-roc videos are for the custom, which I know has different pickups. I use a line6 helix as my rig live/rehearsal rig, and for any non-DI recording.
I don't like the super distorted buzzsaw or overly driven darkglass b7k tone thats common in a lot of metal these days, I like to go for more of a light overdrive to blend more in the mix and let the guitars carry the distortion.
This video is a good reference point of what tone I'm aiming for, although maybe even a bit less distortion.
Based on the above, is the d-roc potentially a good buy? Or is a ng2 or ng3 an obvious choice for my situation.
That'll be a nice bass. Though I do have to be honest and say I can't see the 'ceruse' finish without thinking of George Furlanetto.
