I used to be precious about nitro, but after a while I came to realize that it was just my knee-jerk reaction to all those thick, 2-part polyester finishes in the 70's and 80's. I don't like the dead, inert feel of basses (and especially guitars) when they're inside a thick, absorptive plastic straightjacket.
All I really want from a finish, is to preserve the natural resonance of the instrument, protect it from mung and moisture changes, give bland-looking woods some colour, and keep it from being whittled down to a toothpick through accidental damage and handling wear.
The rubbed synthetic finish on my ABZ is perfect, as far as I'm concerned. It never feels sticky under my hands, protects the wood, shrugs off dings, and has been tinted in colours that I find extremely pleasing. I suspect that I'll probably have to slap some more finish on the neck somewhere around the 20 year mark, but for the time being, I'm more than happy with what I've got.
Well almost a month after posting that I bought my first Dingwall I am back to post the picture. Must admit I was not sure I made the right choice and did not really like the bass at first so I didn’t post any pictures or even acknowledge the bass. I picked it up each day and just couldn’t get on with it. Last night we had a breakthrough. Practicing some arpeggios both major and minor put my hand in some positions that made my thumb and/or wrist a little uncomfortable. I grabbed the Dingwall and saw the light. No more pain and easier all around to play. This is now my favorite bass and became what I thought would be my one forever bass, until today when I received an email showing some basses including the D-Roc Standard in Blue/Purple Color Shift. I feel like this is the wrong place to look for people to talk me out of buying another Dingwall or remind me that a beginner, playing less than a year does not need 2 Dingwalls. Thanks to all for the advice on the first purchase. This is an amazing bass and a terrific community that happily answered all my questions. Oh, and happy holidays to all.

I didn't think I'd need two as I don't gig any more and only write/record/play for fun at home, but I found two smokin deals a week apart that I couldn't pass on. I'm glad I got them too, I haven't seen any NG's or Combustions that cheap since.
Heck, I have 3 Dingwalls and still sometimes play at the beginner level
As part of my continuing experimentation I've now got the P-tone pickup in the neck position of my NG and the stock "neck" pickup in the middle position, but I've got them wired with the DGTC as if they're the neck and bridge pickups. I've removed the stock bridge pickup entirely so now I've got an empty cavity there. So, does anyone happen to have just as empty pickup shell? I'd rather put that in the empty cavity than have an actual pickup, and I also don't love the look of the empty cavity with the battery wires exposed.

You are correct.... you’ll be hard pressed to get anyone here to tell you more dingwall options are a bad thing.
and with that, there is nothing wrong with having quality goods no matter your skill level.
I’m thinking about putting a deposit down for an ABZ or AB1. Just really want a companion to my Super P5.
I just saw a Sonic Blue AB1 on Reverb and am considering one of those sort of classic Fender colors with a maple/maple neck, 5 or 6 string, passive. Either matching Capri Orange to go right along with my SP5 or Shell Pink. Are there any shell pink Dingwalls out there?

I think I saw one in shell pink or a similar light pink here many pages ago.
Not sure how many pages back but someone in the group made one for a different position to achieve the same thing you're looking for. I believe he carved it from wood and painted it.
Wooden dummy pickup with bolt holes, he did a very nice job.

I'm sure there are a few shell pink dingwalls kicking around but I suspect most of them would be Supers.
It was for me at first
Standing I tend to play like Robert Deleo from STP so it helps to take care of the problem not having to stretch out as much.
Also I was looking into Torzal basses for a bit there but I find this really helps for wrist angle holding the bass more upright for both wrists.
Sitting down it still can be a little bit of a pain, I'm actually getting my older combustion adjusted at the nut a little so its lower.
Unfortunately I don't have those skills, but thanks for the suggestions.
