Up for sale is my killer Dingwall SP5. Price is in US Dollars and includes shipping in North America
Bass is in extremely good condition. There is only one minor flaw. A small dent on the top of the headstock that cannot be seen from the front of the back. Pictures show it clearly. Other than that it is very minty. Looks extremely classic yet racier. It's definitely a super charged Pbass. Has Dingwalls 3 way tone control. Center is wide open. Turn it clockwise and it's a mid cut which is fantastic for slapping and turn it counter clockwise and it is a traditional tone control.
These are as good a PBass as you will ever find and probably the best B string on any 5 string P. Ordering a new one would take about 18 months and would cost you more money.
Not looking for trades.

Yes, I used to own that one. Yes, Cocobolo top with Bubinga neck, wenge fretboard, walnut body.
I loved that one.

For me, both Bubinga and Walnut necks are the perfect spot between maple and wenge necks. The only reason I sold it was I had a walnut necked AB2 in it's place.

Yeah, I was looking at the neck on that one. It says wenge but I think your right, the neck is bubinga and the board is wenge.

I just picked this up today. Absolutely amazing bass...neck profile, unbelievably low action and over the top build quality...but I’m guessing all you cats already new this eh? I owned Sadowsky’s for many years...super instruments and quality the same. I tried other basses but would always default back to my trusty Sadowsky...until now. I can’t put it down.

Besides being black, anyone know what the Payson 'Black Daggar' (or dagger, depending if you look at packaging or website spelling)...bring to the table. Has anyone had them? How do they feel in comparison to regular nickel rounds in terms of friction?

I bought a set a while back to try on the Maple Z. Ultimately I preferred regular Nickels as they are more. More dynamic, full, bright, open are words that come to mind for me. I lent them to @BassBH and he used them for a while. He may have more opinion to offer.

I’m gonna try a bit of an experiment with them. I’ll finish fully stringing up the fretless and get a better vibe but I just threw a couple on for a knee jerk impression. Instant impression:

-they are less aggressive feeling towards the board then nickels but sliding up them I’d say friction is increased as heat is increased.
-they do offer a more round wound experience though for sure and it is slightly “suppressed” in comparison. Less Zingy but more of the added pronunciation expected from a round.
They sound good and I’m curious to see how it grows on me but I’d make a good bet that the Payson flats will be back on real soon as they capture what I currently desire.

I think the flats keep getting better with age. I love the “Horn” vibe from them.

also, I like a taper on my strings. The BDs do not have taper.

have you tried DR Black beauties? I find them very similar.

Edit: 2 hrs later and I’m really digging how these things play and speak on the
Fretless. They will stay on longer then I thought.

John sold it new I believe but it ended up at The Low End Bass Shop in Nashville on consignment. I went by a couple of times and played it and was blown away. It is absolutely mint. I thought I would never veer away from Sadowsky but my NYC UV PJ is headed to NJ. I would so dig a Super P too...these D’walls are over the top. + I have so enjoyed the Youtube vids of Sheldon...fascinating man who is passionate about his craft. I love these smaller boutique shops.

Spector won’t replace Dingwall for me in anyway

Of course not, but other (non-dingwall) manufacturers come closer and closer to an adequate alternative it seems.
And variety is always good.

Plus if it can help with strings ..

@AB Nate and @BurningSkies, the Payson Fanned Black Daggers V2 have tapered B,E,A and D string’s. They are close the Payson Fanned NS’s in guage, tone and tension. A lot went into maintaining as much treble detail as possible. I’m really pleased with this final version. C Singles are available too for six string sets. We just finished another production run today. I’m stuffing envelopes and printing art right now.

The spelling “Daggars” was a misspelling done by someone else. I have since taken over the art and printing.

It's been decades since I did Black Beauties, but way way back I did try them. This may be a worthy experiment for me. I was hoping the coating would give them a bit less friction and make them feel a bit smoother to execute.

Monday when we were discussing TI Flats etc, I did pull of the Payson flats and put back on the standard nickel/steel Dingwall strings that I always come home to, just to see if after a few months with the flats, my memories of what the bass 'should' sound like were wrong. The bass just sounds and feels great with rounds on it, and I clocked more time with the instrument yesterday than I have in months, which really tells me something. I did find that I play rounds better now for having the flats and working with them, but they're nowhere near as smooth on the sllding as the flats obviously.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the flats, mind you, just the added tension and tonal aspects just don't seem to work for me as they do others.

I’ve never liked high-tension flats. The low tension vibe of the TIs does it for me.

I agree. I like variety.
I’d also be cool if Spector made the right multi scale as variety. So much so I thought it would be rad to find a Maple HS Dingwall and put EmGs and an 18 v haz in it to mimic a Spector
