Dingwall Owners Club

I just put a new set of rounds on the fretless just to review after having the flats on for a few months. Moving around on flats is just way easier being able to really get a wide range of smoother vibrato is also obviously easier. But I love the lower tension of the rounds, I love the greater acoustic volume of them, and prefer the tone profile.

Flats to me have a 'plunky' tone to them I've just not ever loved, but I'm not sure that that isn't tied to the greater tension, rather than the inherent tone profile. I'm sort of hoping that at the very least, the TI's might meet me in the middle on the situation.

This talk has me considering trying out my black daggers on the fretless. I didn’t really have the right use for them on any fretted basses so maybe that’s a good fit.

I’ve got some fender tape wounds on my Carvin AC-40 fretless and I really really like them on that instrument.
A long scale option for that would be a lot of fun for the fretless.

Yeah, I have tapewound on my Carvin LB75 fretless, and really like them. I’m also going to be putting them on my Warmoth fretless 6, when I get around to building it.

Nice!

ok. I’ll sneak one more Carvin in while we are at it but it includes Dingwall content too soooo....

I put the labella gold tapes on the Carvin 6 and they were fantastic. The B was a little meh but the other strings were killer.

I suppose, when my NG-3 gets to me, I’ll have to take a picture of it next to my XB76WP, and sneak it into my “new Dingwall” post in here.

@Sheldon D.
These things are beautiful, any way I could trade you guys a two month old mint amethyst burst 5 string for one of these beauties? haha

Beautiful colour.

Wow that's a crazy awesome color, I'll be honest I wasn't a huge fan of the first run solid color options on the NG but these recent finishes have been amazing. I also love the white one.

So, no big talk about the new spector dimension here apparently.

Yet it feels like it could be the first real concurrent to the asian dingwalls, no ?
It's 34-37" so that's cool (like the ltd b1005, which I found interesting but nothing special in the end), and it seems to deliver a humbucker-type sound like most dingwalls don't.

I mean ok it's mostly assuming, based on the couple of videos which came out recently, we'll have to see what happens when those actually reach the music shops around (if any of these survives covid of course ..).

It looks really nice, but a few things stick out to me. Comparing the fret positions between this and a regular model, the fretboard meets the body at the exact same fret, and the top horn stops in line with the same fret (about half way between 13 and 14) so it seems to me that they just added the extra scale length at the end of the neck. To me that means it's gonna be a loooong reach to hit that first fret.

I also think they spent all their money on the top and the fishmans. Because of this, a $2100 USD bass had no name die cast tuners. Hopefully I'm wrong though and this becomes another awesome choice in the multiscale world.

There are no Spector dealers in Canada that I'm aware of so the chance of me playing one is pretty much zero. $2100 USD is about $3000 CAD which puts it $200-300 more than a 3 pickup combustion or NG (at least in Canada, don't know about US pricing on Dingwalls). I really want it to be good, but time will tell.

Edited to add: Stuart Spector was quoted as saying he would never build a multiscale because Sheldon had already done so well with them that he felt he couldn't improve on them. Spector was recently bought by Korg, so they probably pushed pretty hard for one because of rising popularity. I feel their R&D was not extensive enough though.

It's the same price (give or take $200) as a Combustion/NG and has super tight string spacing on the 5, even the 4 has tight string spacing. It also just looks neck divey, I'd be very surprised if that balances on a strap but if that ash body is weighty maybe it does?
I'm sure those who like Spectors will like it, I personally am not a fan of any bass with a super tiny body so I would never even pick one up to try it.

IMO this is less bass for the same cash, so I'd rather have a Dingwall all day long, but I'm biased. I don't think they'll be super popular unless they drop the price down a ways.

I found this video featuring Ian Allison. It seems like the bass neck dives quite a bit based on what I saw on other vids

Regarding the Spector. I want to like it but it does have some discriminatory factors that lower my interest.

main one being neck profile. It sounds like it’s pretty thick according to one of the videos. Typical Spector that’s beefier then a MM neck. To me that doesn’t coincide the best with faster/heavy playing which is, I ASSUME, mostly the genre that will have interest in this model. No fact here but it is a turn off for me. Spector can do a comfortable neck but I don’t think this will be one for myself but I’m happy to be proven wrong.

I do think they could have put more effort into the tuners and bridge. Minor detail on a production bass IMO.

curious about the ergonomics as mentioned.

neither finish is a win for me. Minor detail again.
That’s it really. That and as already mentioned, we’ll be hard pressed to try one out locally with out just taking the plunge which I don’t see myself doing on this run. Maybe V2

It looks like he’s having to hold the body down with his right arm the whole time to counteract neck dive. At least that’s one thing I’m seeing, and I’ve watched a lot of his videos.

That would suck, not for reach but for balance.
However my euro5 had a pretty bad case of neck dive and after putting on the lightest tuners I could find it's now perfectly acceptable.

I heard a rumor..... :speechless:

Rumors are good, parts one can order are better :)

I’m a Dingwall guy through and through, so I know my opinion shouldn’t be worth much. The Dimension ain’t for me, but I hope Spector has loads of success with the model
