Asking for a little advice to those with practical experience ~ if you had a 6 way switch [N BNS BNP M BMS BMP) and the option of installing only 2 parallel/series switches on a 3 pickups Dingwall, which pickups would you add the P/S switches to? Neck and Middle? I think I remember (from hardwiring tests) that the bridge was a bit thin in parallel.

Yea...just crazy up there.
Granted I live in an extremely temperate climate I can count the truss rod adjustments I’ve made on one hand in almost 27 years...2 of those were compensating for a thick old set of TI’s and the rest were after doing a bit of feet massaging IIRC.

Really. So that’s how it is. Well, I hope you didn’t get any sand in your bASS crack. Hehe, sorry, that was pretty bad but I couldn’t resist.

I do envy your good weather, but I don’t mind being stuck inside when it’s cold if there’s a great bass stuck in there with me!

All three depending on the song... I'm super happy with N and M soloed, BM parallel, but was hoping to get some more clarity on other modes.

I do have space for 3 switches, but it's a DIY project and it's probably easier to line up 2 switches in a straight line than 3

More seriously, I'd rather play it safe and not take unecessary chances with my drilling skills and soldering minutiae. From an early test a year ago as well as some forum reading, I was not convinced that the bridge would benefit much from the switch, but wanted some level of confirmation from people like you on what combinations are most useful...

More seriously, I'd rather play it safe and not take unecessary chances with my drilling skills and soldering minutiae. From an early test a year ago as well as some forum reading, I was not convinced that the bridge would benefit much from the switch, but wanted some level of confirmation from people like you on what combinations are most useful...

I guess in this case I’d wire the bridge in series and have switches for the other 2 I think as the bridge pretty much never leaves the series position compared to the other 2 pick ups.

I personally really like having the toggle for the bridge pickup (ABZ with FDV pickups, all 3 with toggles). Bridge is usually in series, but I’ve found myself really liking bridge/middle pickups in series with both toggles set to parallel, which gives a very musicman pickup vibe. I also like bridge/neck pickups in parallel with the neck toggle in series and bridge in parallel for a PJ-ish sound.

I will see how confident I am after drilling the first hole in the C5, but I've just ordered 2x3DPDTs- in any case
I suppose I should hard wire those combinations for a test road before any drilling, and I won't touch the ABZ5 unless I do a flawless job on the combustion...

So are you saying you leave the neck in Series the most? I think on a 3x switch I could see myself changing my story to that as well, but I do appreciate the B/N set to parallel for a nice clean scooped tone.
On the D bird switch I often switch the neck to parallel.... could even be persuaded to leave it there i suppose considering that’s the only use of that pick up on that switch and the all on setting doesn’t need the added beef of running the neck pickup set to series. Again could be convinced to cancel the neck pick up switch in favour of the bridge.

If I had a P tone in the mix, then for me it would be a no brainer. That pup is always in series.


Another option is get a 3rd switch, Solder them all up and just leave one buried in the cavity in the back.

with that are you intending to put in a 6 way too? If I had a six way, aside from a P tone in the mix I would fall back to my initial thought of the bridge getting the least use for sure.

that said on the D bird switch the middle would almost always be in series. B/M could be justified to leave it in series on that setting as well.

more non definitive useless info.

Thanks. I actually already installed 6 way switches (Neck Solo, BN Parallel, BN Series, Middle Solo, BM Parallel, BM Series) - they were pre-wired by Mo. I do like the idea of a 3rd switch in the control cavity!

Yes, for me the neck is pretty much always in series. Only exception is if I’m doing bridge/neck in parallel with both toggles in parallel. But that’s exceptionally rare for me. Keep in mind I pretty much only play hard rock/metal, so YMMV for things like worship, jazz, indie rock, etc.
