Dingwall Owners Club

Lately I've been thinking about a 6 string a lot.

One of my bands has a single guitar player doing some fairly basic riffing and chording. That (and bandmates' open-mindedness) leaves me with a lot of freedom to "spice up" tracks.
There's a song on which I have a polyphonic thing that sounds really good, but is incredibly uncomfortable to play on the highest frets of my Super P 5. For the first time (except when I tried to cover some Karnivool) I feel I would have real use for a higher string. It would definitely open doors for the new material we just started writing too.

I found a good deal on an ABII 6 close to me, which is not quite how I would have spec'd and a touch heavier than I would prefer at ~4.2 kg. But I still like it and good deals on Dingwalls are rare.

Another option would be getting another 5 string to tune EADGC / DADGC (there's a single song recorded in drop tuning which I can pull off but isn't as punchy in standard 5 string tuning) and switch between the 2 basses.
Might also consider other brands (the most solid contender being a Maruszczyk frog)

Thoughts?

If ordering a Drop D equipped Super Series from Dingwall, are all of the posts the same length? Both Super Js I have owned had a longer post on the E tuner, but I bought them used so they might have been added later.

Nope, Hipshot only makes the short shaft on a standard tuner. The short shafts are to negate the need for an A string retainer with the proper break angle - not really important for an E string.

Hi Eloann

Not sure I am answering your question but I recently got my 1st Dingwall - ABII 6 string.

It’s an incredible instrument and I think it would provide you with the opportunity to play in the higher registers and maintain the integrity of being the traditional foundational bass player.

Your thoughts of getting a 5string and tuning EADGC -also works for this. (I have Warwick Thumb Fretless that I tuning this way and it gives you that option quite well).

The 6string gives you the best of all options-IMO.

The 6string does take a little bit of getting used to but it has been a lot of fun.

Your lucky to find one close to you- I had to rely on the Dingwall group to take the plunge without having the opportunity to even play one.

I have absolutely No regrets.

I think the 6string will give you a great vehicle to expand your options.

Good luck.

On the topic of P pickups, I still don't really understand the wizardry of the FD3s. How are they a

I’m definitely an advocate of course but it does depend on your comfort on the long scale and a larger neck.

I of course am always curious to see a photo or hear the spec of what your looking at vs what your looking for.

I will say the Z neck six strings are a breeze to play if you do have concern about neck size.

an alternative fanned fret option which I hate to even suggest but is completely valid and I’m guilty myself is the Ibanez EHB. 35” scale B, FF, nice neck profile.

Also, I have had the opportunity to play a couple of maruszycks and honestly was very underwhelmed. Fit and finish for price tag didn’t sell me in anyway. They look live though.

Thanks for the comments.
I would have spec'd a Z2 with SFII pickups, Glock pre, toggles switches, flamed maple top in trans red and ziricote freboard. Attaching a pic of the ABII I'm considering.

I know I'm reasonably comfortable with the long scale since in my "other" band I play an ABI 4 tuned BEAD. The reach reducing pin helps.

I've considered the Ibanez among others (Kiesel comes to mind) but I don't feel drawn to them and probably won't find any to try locally.

I may get the ABII to see if I gel with the 6 thing, then eventually replace it with a Z.

Used Dingwall sixers at a good price are rare as hen’s teeth. Don’t overthink this.
It's actually new - old stock at a very poorly referenced shop.

That is short!!! Excellent. Can’t wait to see this one and your custom electronics plan
Deposit was put down mid-November 2019, so that would put it right about 18 months from start to end. Not too bad, really. Hopefully @silky smoove 's is also almost done, since he put a deposit on his like, one day before I did, also through Chad @ TheBassShop.

it is a nicely spec’d AB for sure. Are you close enough to try before you buy?

I keep hoping to see my Super J on the Dingwall Instagram shipping room photos, but it hasn't popped up yet. Oh well. It keeps the purchase price less the deposit in my savings account for longer :p

Here's the video on the result of my mods! Very happy

Sounds great. Is it possible to have passive mode with the John East ? As much as I like my NG3 with a preamp, the pickups also sound great in passive. I have the 4 string little brother of your 5 string. Also bought from Jason and added the six way rotary. A couple of my settings are different but I like yours too.

I believe you'd need that ordered custom or would need to modify the vol knob circuit to add a switchable bypass to the preamp. There's a jumper as well that you'd need to adjust on teh PCB from what I understand. Take that for what you will, John is probably the main man there for questions like that.

I've got an NG-2 in Pink Swirl on the way to me. One of the first things I'm debating is buying the 3 pickup upgrade kit. Next I'm thinking about custom wiring a 6-way rotary like this (+ series, // parallel):
1: Bridge
2: Bridge + Middle (The Nolly sound)
3: Bridge // Middle (The stingray/thumb-ish sound?)
4: Bridge // Middle + Neck (the D-roc sound)
5: Bridge // Neck (The jazz bass sound)
6: Neck

Seems versatile, best of both the Dingwall 4-way options, and the progression makes some logical sense to me.

But, from parts of this thread and others a lot of people seem to like the Middle pickup solo sound. Should I sub one of these out for that?

Personally, #1 has -zero- use for me. I'd probably, using your + // markings...

1: Bridge + Middle
2: Bridge // Middle
3: Middle solo
4: Bridge // Middle + Neck
5: Bridge // Neck
6: Neck solo

Middle solo is just about my favorite on 3x's, but all three (#4) is just insane, too.
