Dingwall Owners Club

I got a matte black bakelite guard in last week, I think I am going to enjoy it more than PCV.

Also I have never been more happy I got a maple fretboard, a wenge neck and board would also go great with this finish.

I thought that the Super P and J bodies had evolved subtly over time, but not sure where I got that impression.

Edit-Maybe it was the SJ bodies got slimmer when they were no longer chambered? I dunno.
The shape/contours definitely changed a bit on the Super Js. I no longer own that first year run to compare how much they have changed in thickness though. My newer generation SJ5 is slightly thinner than my SJ4, but it is minimal.

Is there a difference between the FD-3N pickup that comes in the neck position versus the bridge position (on an NG2, if it matters)? Or are the two pickups identical? I suspect it's the latter but I'm curious if anyone can confirm.

I believe they are wound differently. I don’t know the exact discrepancies but often a bridge pick up is would hotter due to less vibration happening near the bridge vs over the neck position and sometimes due to polarity the bridge can be wound in reverse if I understand it correctly.
I know the topic has been discussed here and that there is some form of difference but I can’t pinpoint what exactly it is.

That the shop marks and sells the pickups as neck or bridge would suggest that there's a difference. Otherwise you'd not go to that trouble.

I didn't see any indication of that on the description page for the NG.

I'm not surprised...they can't put every little thing in the description. I know from experience they're marked, and that if you're buying any kind of replacement they'll ask to make sure you get the correct one. If it's a 3-pickup model there's also the magnetic polarity to deal with, so that can also change what pickup gets used in either the middle or neck.

There is no specific 'middle' pickup' so basses will have N/N/B with one of the Neck pickups' polarity reversed (the middle one, I believe)

I've had a chance to spend some quality time with my all wenge neck Jazz Fender clone.. I get the enthusiasm for wenge necks. I'm not sure if the tone, feel, or looks are the best part.

I had a Warwick 2000 Infinity, I loved everything about it but the neck balance/heaviness. I think it was an Ovankol neck, but reminded me of this neck. My Roscoe Custom SKB 3005 has Wenge sections and fretboard, but doesn't sound or feel as good.

This has a very powerful midrange both PUPs in series, with a very "beefy" tone with bass. And a cool "clanky" thing with the bass rolled off. Both PUPs in parallel can get a quasi Thunderbird growl, or a Jazz bass played with a pick thing (played fingerstyle). Neck solo'd sounds very P like. There's no way I'm going to break this bass up.

Again, I get it and I'm a convert.

Well, I've been having the same problem as @BurningSkies - being haunted by a bass. Instead of a green Super P, mine is a red Afterburner I. With the help of the estimable John Fox, I'm getting it out of my head and into my hands this fall. He makes it too easy.
John is an evil man. Last summer, I bought a mint Z3 from him (see my avatar). The transaction was so smooth, we chatted on the phone, emailed and texted several times. He shipped it quickly and well packed. I mentioned I might order a SP in the fall. However, in the fall, I purchased an amazing 1953 American Standard (upright bass) and decided that since I already have 3 Dingwalls (Z3, SJ & NG3) and my old '70s P-bass, I didn't need another bass, or the added expense. Fast forward to this January, John messaged me about the SP. The hamster starting running like mad in the big wheel in my old brain, the excitement rose again and I ended up giving him my specs along with a deposit. My new SPJ should be here by the end of the summer. Like I said, he's an evil man. But also the nicest guy you can deal with and I'm happy to send my business his way and highly recommend him. OK, back to practicing upright. Carry on.

What did you end up with?

Good man - got my order in before the prices rise later this month.
