I was kind of side steeping the topic a bit since I won't give TB any more money, and don't want yet another infraction for being perceived as trying to sell without the racket. I don't want to end up banned like one of our favorite dingwall shops / nice person / knowledgeable guys.

There was a wonderful member here, John Fox, who was a "commercial user" because he also has a store. He was very, very, VERY helpful and knowledgable, and often in this very thread helping people, even when it clearly meant no $/business for him.
I don't know the exact reasoning, but, TalkBass admins banned him. That was when I stepped away from the forums for ~6 months, and even still make sure to not give talkbass much attention. I also fully enabled ad blocker on this site, mostly out of spite. I'm immature like that .

In addition, there's pretty heavy handed rules about selling here. TB wants their cut. So if someone reported me even mentioning that I was selling Dingwalls, I would get "infraction" points - because I won't pay the TB fee.

All you said was that you hadn't managed to sell your basses. And I asked for a link to a listing. And you said there wasn't one.

So no issue as far as I can tell.

Yeah, I puzzled some of it together from some conversations, but didn't see it with my own eyes. I often would give site admins the benefit of the doubt, but, having been here 19 years now, I know better than to in this case .

I had a thread created out of genuine curiosity..... it seems to have vanished.

my poll was “who uses the TB bazaar?”

the statistics were pretty defining how paying more for a commercial user account minimizing exposure for salable goods.

Systems often need revision when faults are detected but.....

I have been on various forums on a broad swaths of topics over the years.
All of them end up with situations where the rules make no sense and are applied anyway in the interest of "fairness". And feelings get hurt or worse. It appears to be one of the constants of forums.

I'm too new here, to new playing bass to have enough perspective, but of the places I have found online this seems to be by far the most helpful place with the most interesting conversations. So that's why I'm here and post questions that show how little I know and try to contribute back with the wiki and other small things I can do.

Forums are about the people you find there, not about the site admins.

That bass does ship with Dingwall nickel/steel strings. I'd suggest an easy try would be to grab a set of the Dingwall stainless steel strings to try. They're closer to what you're feeling.

On the pickup...First off, under those shells, they're not humbuckers. They're split coils closer to a P-Bass setup. Here's something that you can do at home if you're fairly comfortable with opening it up. There's a good chance that some or all of the pickups' coils are wired in series. That gives some low-mid emphasis but at the expense of extension in the highs and deep lows. For more of a Jazz bass tone, the coils in each pickup can be easily changed to parallel.

Here's an example of how to tell:

Pickups that are wired in series have the green/black leads terminated together. Pickups that are in parallel have the red/green and black/white paired and heading to the switch terminals.

My pickups are wired in series. So if the Dingwall SS strings did not bring the sound I'm heading for, I'll test wiring them in parallel.
I watched the Dingwall string comparison by Patrick Hunter in the meantime. And I'm now very optimistic that they will do the job for me.
The original Dingwall strings are easily available over here, so I'll go that route first.

I also noticed that the factory setup of my bass wasn't the best. Trussrod and intonation were excellent but not the pickup and string heights at the bridge. when I was digging in harder the bass itself distorted on the output. So bringing down the pickups and reajusting the string heights has cleared up the sound a lot especially in the lower mids.

One more thing I noticed... if I swipe my finger over the beautiful pickguard I get some static charges which are hearable on the output. Did anybody had the same experiece?
What can I do to resolve it besides changing the PG?

Yeah, the parallel pickup wiring will give you something closer to a single coil or hi-fi tone, wider and flatter, and maybe with a hint of scoop in the mids.

Static pickguards...I've never had the issue with my NG or Combustion, but it's an age old thing. I know I've had it on guitars in the past and/or I've been in the studio and tracked down recorded 'noise' to pickguard static. Supposedly you can temporarily fix with a rub of an anti-static dryer sheet. And I know that in some cases people have grounded their guitars by applying a layer of foil to the underside of the guard then grounding it. Or you could just remove the guard altogether.

Ive experience that a few times on different instruments. try a dryer sheet

My brand new NG-2 in pink swirl arrived Friday!



The B string is something else. Still debating a 3 pickup upgrade or a 6 selector switch, maybe some push-pull series parallel knobs.

Only weirdness is the 4-way selector currently. I feel like it's backwards compared to what I expected, neck and bridge are reversed. But that'll just take getting used to.

But also, someone the knob on the pickup selector spins instead of switching pickups, seems like the knob is sometimes slipping against the inner components if I turn it too slowly. Anyone else experience this?

Does it have a set screw? Tiny little Allen screw in the side of the knob?

It doesn't, the metal shell is slipping against the plastic insert I think. The first time I pulled the knob off to the insert stayed on the guitar. Maybe I need a bit of glue or something to get it to stay connected better.

That’s a good idea, I haven't this style of knob on my Dingwalls.

Does the shaft of the pot have a flat side, or is it shaped like the inside of the knob sleeve?

Either way, if you can’t fix this knob, maybe swapping it out with another on your bass will do it. The rotary switch takes quite a bit more force to switch positions than just turning a tone pot.

That's strange, I have a set screw knob on my NG2's rotary selector (the remaining knobs do not have a set screw). I rotated the knob so that I'd be able to see the set screw whilst playing, and that helps me to see which pickup selection I'm on. From what I remember when I made the adjustment, the rotary switch had a smooth shaft, which wouldn't work well with that plastic shell from your photo. Is your rotary switch smooth or ridged? I can't quite tell from the photo.

Any other NG/Combustion owners able to chime in if they have set screws on their rotary switch knobs?
