I am all new to this club! I've never touched a Dingwall bass or any fanned fretted bass before this week,

Here is my new Z3 in action and in images, what a beast!

That’s a good idea, I haven't this style of knob on my Dingwalls.

Does the shaft of the pot have a flat side, or is it shaped like the inside of the knob sleeve?

Either way, if you can’t fix this knob, maybe swapping it out with another on your bass will do it. The rotary switch takes quite a bit more force to switch positions than just turning a tone pot.

That's strange, I have a set screw knob on my NG2's rotary selector (the remaining knobs do not have a set screw). I rotated the knob so that I'd be able to see the set screw whilst playing, and that helps me to see which pickup selection I'm on. From what I remember when I made the adjustment, the rotary switch had a smooth shaft, which wouldn't work well with that plastic shell from your photo. Is your rotary switch smooth or ridged? I can't quite tell from the photo.

Any other NG/Combustion owners able to chime in if they have set screws on their rotary switch knobs?

No set screw, and the shaft is knurled to match the knob. Maybe somewhere along the lines they started sourcing knurled 4 way selectors instead of D shaped ones?

That's a good call to one of the other knobs, if one grips a bit better I'm sure this one would still be fine on the volume or one of the eq pots. I just tried swapping it with the bass EQ Knob and it feels a bit more stable.

Yeah, the parallel pickup wiring will give you something closer to a single coil or hi-fi tone, wider and flatter, and maybe with a hint of scoop in the mids.

Static pickguards...I've never had the issue with my NG or Combustion, but it's an age old thing. I know I've had it on guitars in the past and/or I've been in the studio and tracked down recorded 'noise' to pickguard static. Supposedly you can temporarily fix with a rub of an anti-static dryer sheet. And I know that in some cases people have grounded their guitars by applying a layer of foil to the underside of the guard then grounding it. Or you could just remove the guard altogether.

I'll try the dryer sheet. If this doesn't help I'll ground the pg.

It will actually go away in time too. The r maybe come back again, depends on storage etc.

you just need to discharge the static electricity on it. Dryer sheets work or there are other methods that don’t come to mind right now but a quick search will open you up some options.

I can check with customer service but does anyonr know if you custom order a super P or J 5 is the neck profile similar to a Z3 or can you specify that profile (or thickness at minumum)?

Almost certain there's no deviation on neck profiles. The Super Ps and Js I've played did not feel like my Zs at all.

Hey, @AB Nate - I recognize you from the Spector forum. I've been on the hunt lately for a fanned fret 5-string bass. I was considering one of the new Korean-made Spector Dimension 5-strings, however, I've had an itch to try a Dingwall for a while now. Score one for me as I've just pulled the trigger!

I have a few questions that I'm hoping the experts on here won't mind answering for me. I guess everyone starts as a noob, huh?

1. Curious when this bass was made. In reading the comments re: this particular bass, I see that it's probably one of the earliest AB2s. Is there a serial number lookup anywhere? Or would anyone know when the AB2 model came out?
2. I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not even sure if this one has active or passive electronics! Anyone know just by looking?
3. The pickups say "Dingwall." Any idea what these are? Obviously custom made, just wondering if they have a model name or if these were perhaps prototypes?
4. Strings. Are the Dingwall strings basically the way to go here or are there other options? If so, anyone know a good USA source or will I just need to order from Dingwall and pay extra for shipping? I did check out FretNation, but the strings are not currently in stock. I've bought a set of Dunlops fanned fret strings from FN for now, just so I have something to use when the bass arrives.

Looks active to me - note, the pickups are NOT active, just an active preamp.

Well, they're square shell Dingwall in-house made pickups. Probably FD2?

4. Strings. Are the Dingwall strings basically the way to go here or are there other options? If so, anyone know a good USA source or will I just need to order from Dingwall and pay extra for shipping? I did check out FretNation, but the strings are not currently in stock. I've bought a set of Dunlops fanned fret strings from FN for now, just so I have something to use when the bass arrives.

There's a few options; Payson strings are also nice. I tend to alternate between Payson and Dingwall. There's a least a couple of other options, but the names escape me at the moment.

That shop that has his AB2 isn't far from me. If you need eyes on it before buying, lemme know.

Yep. I inquired several years ago if they would make me a meatier (thicker front to back) SJ4 neck. I was politely told that while they have a lot of options available, they are not a custom shop.

Definitely a different carve on the Supers than the Zs I’ve played. Different flavors of awesome.

For sure. With how many orders they're dealing with, I'm not surprised. I'm blown away they're accommodating me on several things that aren't really options and a little unusual to ask. Can't wait for it to be in my hands...

Nice score! You started with a good one, bro! Looks like Selta did a pretty good job answering your questions. Emailing Dingwall tech is definitely gonna be the best way to answer question #1. You could try looking in the control cavity or under the pickups to see if there's a date written in there?

Looks like you, me, and @AB Nate are just gonna be bopping back and forth between the Dingwall group and the Spector group!
