Ok, very surprisingly, the second E string also sounds the same, like an old string I would almost replace
Am I doing anything wrong?
Or did I possibly get unlucky with a bad batch?

Actually, both the B and the E don't sound fresh, but the E the most.. The B is just a little bit fresher sounding than the E, not a lot. The B sounds a bit like a new coated string

I really don't get it

I’ve had bad E and B strings from a few different companies, even multiple packs of the same brand. It happens, IMO. I’ve always got free replacements in those situations.

They arrived from Thomann last Tuesday, I can't tell how long they were sitting in their stock.

The E is definitely not fresh off the boat, even when I was busy tuning it up, I could already feel it had zero brightness, to later confirm it was dead. Just felt the same process now with the second E I installed

This is very unusual. I've been playing Dingwall strings for twelve years without experiencing a dead string, and you got two. It was cool of Sheldon to pop in and offer replacements, though.

Definitely, they sure seem like great strings, they really feel great, but yeah, I got unlucky, I guess

Probably a good time for a quick reminder to bend/crimp your strings before you cut them and get them in those tuners. Without silk wrapping, it's possible to release the wrap from being locked around the core of round wound strings. I've always had good luck, but you never know.

So is the current wait for custom still about 18 months?

From my recent conversations, the answer to that question is yes unless, like Selta mentioned, you grab an unclaimed slot with a dealer. I think that gets you down to 6-7 months. As long as the bass isn't in production, you can change everything up to, and including, the model.

Bending and crimping before trimming is mandatory!

I'm only comparing months old SS strings that were on this bass that I recently purchased last week, vs brand new nickel strings. But I have nickel strings on all my other basses

I play only nickel strings for 15 years, so I'm a bit familiar with how good quality nickel strings are supposed to sound

Unless B and E nickel don't sound as bright as the A, D and G specifically on Dingwall basses??
This is my very first Dingwall after all.

I've had it happen once and the string did have silk.

I recently restrung an SJ with some dingwall nickel strings, the A string looked oddly like it was wavy, as if in motion, I was actually gonna let dingwall know but oddly with it, it felt even and smooth and formed properly and sounded fantastic like the rest of the set. Strange things happen, surely another set will get you sorted out.

what I was referring to was the pick up height, of perhaps for some reason the B side of the pick up was dropped excessively low in comparison to the string to pick up height balance of the G side of the pick up. I have no doubt you know how a bass should be set up, I’m just trying to help check off some off chance factors.

I don't suspect anything on the bass, it is fantastic, and it sounded fantastic with the previous SS strings on it.

Just reach out to Dingwall and get replacements, so you can put this weird episode behind you and get back to enjoying the bass. There really isn’t much else to investigate here.

Good news, I had the idea to try the same E string on my Modulus Quantum, it sounded equally dead, so nothing is wrong with the bass..

In fact, my months old Elixir nickel (coated) strings sounded much more fresh.

Case closed, bad batch, hard luck! It happens.. Hope I will get 2 sets replacements, I can send these ones back if necessary.

Are these proprietary or just your run of the mill allen keys? If so, do I need a metric or imperial set? Of course I'll wait to see if anything comes with my bass. Just trying to plan ahead in the event that I need to make any adjustments to my AB2 which will be arriving in 3 days!

New or used? They normally come with a complete toolkit in a nice Dingwall pouch.

As @1983L2000 mentioned, a new instrument will arrive with all the necessary tools.

Crap. Not good. Send an email to [email protected] we'll get you sorted out. Strings are manufactured in batches which means that if there is a problem with one string, it can potentially be a problem with all of the strings in that batch. Problems with dead strings are rare, but when they do happen, we take care of it immediately.

With an older bass, chances are the wrenches are either missing or getting worn. I'd hold off until the bass arrives to confirm this. The truss-rod wrench is somewhat specialized. It's a ball ended 9/64" allen. Major tool stores will have one with a screw driver handle. Look for Bondhus brand. Otherwise we have the kits available.
