The 5-string Combustion fretless has the usual Dingwall strings on it right now, but I tried Payson flats...I loved the smoothness of them but don't love the higher tension/stiffer tensile feel of the strings. I also have always not liked the perceived 'plunky' vibe of flats and the vibrational deadening.
Hmm. I agree that the reduced cores from Payson have higher tension, but I never felt that with Payson flats. Vibrational deading - I can see that a bit - depends how I play. But whenever I go back to Stainless I realize why I like the Payson flats so much.
