Dingwall Owners Club

I agree with @Challanger2 on the 'Birds/Rocs that it feels like a P bass.

My NG 4 string feels like a Jazz to me, along the lines of my Lakland in my profile picture. Definitely smaller than the D Bird, but it doesn't feel like a Soundgear 4 to my hands.

The Combustion 5 feels closer to Soundgear territory to me, though I'm not sure if the profile has changed with newer iterations of the Combustion.

My NG and Combustion necks are identical in the shape and thicknesses...

My new NG3 6 is in my town...somewhere...NDD coming really soon! Haven't even seen one in real life let alone played one...Exciting times
I ordered mine "blind." I just really liked the sound they made. There wasn't really anywhere I could try one out. I'm really happy with it. It's an excellent instrument. You could play one through a music career no problem. I would prefer an upgrade to the bridge. I think individual bridges are cool, but it's really sharp.....the way it sticks up, I'm not in love with it from a purely ergonomic standpoint. I also wish it had passive tone control. But it's still amazing, very happy to have it and play it.

There must be a huge amount of us, who just like you, took a leap of faith to purchase a Dingwall, based on the recommendations of people who own one.

Thank you to everyone on this thread for your encouragement and support.

Is there a way to modify the NG to make it include passive tone control without switching out the Darkglass preamp?

I'd look at a concentric pot solution featuring the volume pot position, that way you can still use the DGTC pots with their harnesses. For the details of how to get it wired correctly, I'll leave that up to others as to if it goes before the preamp or after.

Yep. My first was a WPB Afterburner 1 I bought sight unseen and also had never seen/played one in person.

I guess I’m a rare opposite to most. I got to walk into a music store and playa few of them but as soon as I put my AB2 in my hands it was game over. I did try an SJ, Z, and some of the first run combustion’s shortly after but none felt like home like that AB2. I think I’ve grown somewhat and am more adaptable these days but it felt absolutely perfect.

geez, I sound like goldielocks.... without the locks....

Bingo! I was going to do this with my Dingwall NG3 before swapping out the pre for the East. The DG essentially sits after the initial vol or vol/tone control and doesn't have those controls integrated as part of the preamp circuit like some other preamps, so a Vol/Tone stack would be the perfect solution for those who want more flexibility without more drastic mods.

Yep. Only TB posts and YouTube vids to go off of (and a Nolly interview on SBL). Own 2 NGs now, plan to get a Canadian model next. Looking at Z3+Darkglass, AB1 or Lee Sklar. No experience with the Canadian models, input would be great on what to look for (pickup options, extra frills, etc.)

Would seem easy enough to deal with too. If it all just needs to sit before the preamp, then you get: Pickups->Switch-Passive Tone->Volume->Preamp->Out.

Since it sits before the preamp, your values wouldn't change for the potentiometer or roll off capacitor values.

When I ordered my Super P I asked myself: "Which features do I really need to have to be fully happy with the bass?"
Then I thought about additional upgrades that would make it a sexier build, but not take away anything from the performance point of view

I got my first Dingwall in the summer of 2020. ABII - 6 string 3 pickups - Glockenklang Preamp.

The tonal range is spectacular but they all sound pretty good.

I play music from a lot of genres and it works well for all that I am doing.

I come from an original back of playing Fenders, Gibson and Music Man.

I never could find a great sound from my Music Man - this was very earlier in the pre-amp era.

So I mainly played Fender Jazz and Precision basses for a while.

In the 90s - I switched to Warwick and found their pre-amp appealing.

When I got the Dingwall, I immediately loved the tones of the neck pickup it just sounded great for everything. So much so that I didn’t experiment much with the other pickup options.

Later, I discovered all the other options I had been neglecting and now the hardest part is deciding which sounds best for some pieces.

The truth is the bass just sounds good no matter what you select.

I get a lot of compliments on its sound - it cuts through when it should and holds everything together quite nicely.

I know everyone hears sounds differently but I think these basses are incredible.

Indeed! On the scope of things, a rather simple mod. I like this particular aspect of the DG preamp, it sits as almost an 'add on module' to an existing passive circuit vs. replacing the entire thing like the John East. I believe the EMG pre can act in a similar manner too, though EMG is much easier to integrate their own plug and play volume and tone modules, so you would essentially splice in the EMG connectors after the rotary

That's because you are closer to the Dingwall epicentre!

Yes. Tiz true. and I frequented(hardly) the right store.

But At the time I was just playing something with strings on it....not looking for better really. As fate would have it(actually Tom, the sales associate), it put a dingwall into my naive hands.
Then I played the AB and it turns out there is no brand better.
