it sounds like to me it is probably reaching back out to the seller and get some info from him on the modifications.

I have a feeling that something was done like wiring all the pickups together (series or parallel) then straight to the jack or whatever. It would be very odd for neither the switch nor the preamp to do anything.

Yeah, I agree. maybe passive and jazz setting or something else odd.

Thank you so much, yeah the stuff on the neck was cool but the finish lacks a smoothness in certain areas. So far it doesn’t seem to affect playing but I’m gonna have to see how it can be removed. And even if it’s possible.

Also, we don't know that this bass was sold by the original owner or has passed through a few sets of hands...so all bets are off. The posts I link don't talk about any electronics mods, but also don't mention the change to the jackplate either.

I thought the same thing but now it seems I’m gonna have to look into the preamp itself to see if it’s the original and how it’s supposed to be wired.

I contacted the original owner to ask to see if he had done any electronic adjustments or was it the guy who I just got it from.

I thought the same thing but now it seems I’m gonna have to look into the preamp itself to see if it’s the original and how it’s supposed to be wired.

Nothing at all, I tried removing the battery to just check around and all it does is kill the bass

That much is working correctly. You do need a battery in place whether in active or passive mode.

Wasn't the point of the passive switch that you can still keep playing even if the battery is empty?

Still needs the connection to work.

It's a tonal choice, not a "I forgot to take care of my bass and need bailed out" choice. Some basses work that way though.

Throw some fresh batteries in and see if there is any change in the operation.

They’re 18v so 2 9v connectors, no paper clip needed just join em up…. Not sure it’ll work though

My NG-3 sounds almost identical between the active and passive modes…if the EQ is flat, of course.

Edit to add: I read more replies. Yeah, you should definitely get quite different tones with the pickup rotary switch, and the EQ, of course.

I will say curiosity just got the best of me…..

I just removed the batteries from my super with a glock and my Z6 with a DGTC and both work without batteries installed in passive mode which I thought to be the case. I think the same applies to the production basses.
