Dingwall Owners Club

The whole world is waiting on something right now…Every major port in the world is backlogged.
This. Emphatically.

My company is paying TRIPLE of what we did pre-pandemic for a shipping container, and we still have shipments from October that we haven’t received.

The great thing about Dingwall basses is the ingenuity and purpose-made design packed into EVERY aspect of the bass.

The downside of that is that you (or the company, in this case) just can’t go to the store and buy off-the-shelf parts when the logistics chain gets complicated.

As a bassist, I empathize with your “Christmas morning” excitement…but relative to the millions who have lost their life or a family member in this pandemic, a delayed bass is an irritant, not a problem.

Always a bummer to have an unexpected wait, or a longer than expected wait on something you really want. I think we all can commiserate here in one way or another whether it's a bass or some other of the cool things we inevitably all like!

18 months ago we had no idea we'd be living through such a huge disruption in our lives but also in international supply chains, shipping and materials manufacture.

It is very frustrating...but I think you should hold in and make your mind up once you have the actual bass in hand.

When I lightly inquired about a production DRoc 5, right around when they were announced, my dealer was extremely clear with me that there was no way to know precisely when they'd show up. Also having launched my own products a time or two in the past, I am familiar with the usual things that come up and cause delays and issues. Throw in a pandemic, crazy supply chain issues, lack of shipping containers in China (there's likely going to be a board game apocolypse later this year, as a TON of the smaller companies cannot afford the 5x to 8x shipping cost. One I'm very familiar recently had to make the call to not ship on time, as the shipping cost went from $4k to $22k!), and well, you have what we are. I feel bad for all those who are waiting, and at the same time, I feel like Sheldon and crew have been very communicative about timeline and updates. May you all get your basses soon!

So it has some backbow and the nut is coming loose from the truss rod vs tensioning it?

*Some* backbow is an understatement. It’s continually moving back when I’m trying to combat that, I want forward relief but I can’t get it to move. The truss rod nut is moving freely but the rod isn’t following, it seems stuck.
I have a mid 2020 Z2 5 string which I can only assume uses the same rod, and I can definitely feel when loosening it that both the rod and nut are under tension and feel it being relieved when I want forward relief. This 6 string just lets the nut spin and doesn’t move the rod. I’ve spun this truss rod nut a couple of revolutions and if I turn it anymore it will just fall off the thread, all the while not having the neck moved.

That's a tough one. Since Dingwall is in touch with you and the dealer, I'd let them walk you through anything needed to fix it without offering my (probably wrong) help! I hope it gets resolved quickly for you.

@BurningSkies thanks for @-ing me!

@NickBassCentral - I can't believe that I still haven't ever been to Bass Central and I have been 2 hours away or less, for most of my life. I will rectify that and reach out prior. As to me looking right now, I know if I go import, I will go nuts until I have a Canadian one because I have bitten that apple and it is SO TASTY. The import basses are awesome no doubt but that doesn't matter to my irrational brain :)

Sorry to hear man.
I know Sheldon and Co will get you fixed up.
I’ve experience something similar before on a bass. It’s a drag when you feel that nut loosen off before you achieve your desired set up. Couldn’t imagine on a brand new build….

Having a couple of friends who built an embedded device business over the past few years and who are teetering at the edge of bankruptcy because they cannot get their existing product shipped from China, nor can they get samples of the next generation, or prototypes of the one after that. Everything is stuck and on hold. A few uber-wealthy companies (I'm looking at you, Apple) are buying up all free capacity out of Shengzen the moment it becomes available. This is reverberating throughout the supply chain, to the point that I know of several companies contemplating shifting manufacturing to North America again. But of course that comes with a very different cost that the customers might not be willing to pay for, either.

I haven't managed to actually order a new custom bass (ignoring the whole "crappy bass amateur with insanely expensive gear" thing for a moment) because I simply am not good at waiting (which makes this whole "getting better at playing bass" thing hard... isn't there a FastPass I can purchase?).

So, yeah, waiting sucks. Waiting for a bass that you (quite literally) can't wait to get into your hands sucks. But - perspective.
The Dingwalls that I have (bought used - and the two weeks of shipping wait nearly killed me) are so much better than any other bass I've ever played... I'd suggest withholding final decisions until you have your new instrument in hand :)

Buy used. It's tasty. It's fast. There are amazing Canadian basses popping up every few weeks.

I've done both. I have two Dingwalls that I ordered and I have two that I purchased used. I also have one that was 'middle ground' I found a dealer with a production model on order from about 6 months prior and I bought that instrument, meaning my wait was much shorter than waiting the full time. My first Dingwall was an AB1...and similarly had been ordered by Bass Central in advance...I waited 3 weeks for it to show up at BC.

This case is obviously different for all the pandemic related stuff, but also because it's a new model first run. Sometimes they run into production wrinkles on new stuff.

I've had one case of a long Dingwall wait...and that was really in a previous era so not really germane to this situation.

For sure. I am going to list my lovely EBMM that I am overly critical/in my head about to get my funds in a place where I can action quickly when the right one pops up. Luckily, I have a fretless that I really love that can hold me over if I am in between fretted basses for a bit.

Thanks much, and yeah I know it’ll be sorted one way or another by the shop.
