Same here. I’ve kept showing my friends and band mates the same picture since January luckily I’ve ordered mine in the same color as the only available picture of Standard 5 exists. 9D8CCEC5-0CEC-42F2-8638-8710D5B57572.jpeg

I’ve settled on a build and am in process of getting my order in. I’m not creative enough to come up with my own idea, but that’s okay, because Rufus Mann’s bass has always struck a deep note with me even though the purple reverse burst has been done many times over.

Going for a 6-string version of this with series/parallel toggles.

The part that’s gonna hurt is that I’m going to need to sell 3 of my beloved basses to afford it: Strandberg Prog 5, Sadowsky WL-5, and my NG3-6 (which I bought to tide me over while I wait for a custom build).

Of the 3, I like the Sadowsky’s overall tone most of all, except the B which is good but no Dingwall, and there’s no 6-string option which is what I’m digging these days. Was my dream player’s bass for years and I’m gonna miss her.

I love the aesthetics, feel, light weight, and playability of the Strandberg most, minus the B which is even less good than the Sadowsky and the overall tone is a bit too warm for my taste requiring MUCH eq’ing to suit me, and again no 6-string option. Was hoping this would be my forever bass, but not quite there.

I like the NG’s B, balance on the strap, 6-string range, and tonal versatility the most. My current overall fave of the 3. Things I’d like to change are flatter fretboard radius toward the bridge/plucking hand, a bit more traditional sounding pickups, more rounded and comfortable body shape, slightly less “metal” look, and better hardware, which is why I gravitate to the Z because it’s basically all those things.

In a nutshell, that Z better be damn good!

To say I'm picky would be an understatement. :D Maybe even a little OCD. lol.

I am a little worried that they don't have any buckeye burl x-tops available at the moment to choose from. Hoping it doesn't delay the order process since I don't think a direct order is possible with me living in Germany these days. They directed me to their EU distributor, and I'm not yet sure if I'll be able to get an order slot without a full order totally spec'd out. I should find out soon enough.

In the US, I did two orders withOUT having a full spec.
My first one I spec'd completely about 3-4 months after getting my slot.
The latest one, hopefully complete soon, I didn't complete the specs until a month ago haha.

If I recall, in both cases I had to give a model and as much spec as I could to get a build spot. Later, I was given a build sheet to approve or modify. For my current build, it took 3 months to find an X-top that I really liked.

I get that. I can be a little bit obsessive about details too. I’ve learned compromise within reason but with my last build. No compromise occurred. It’s a truly amazing instrument. Yours will be too!!

having played and owned a lot of dingwalls and others hasn’t helped my expectations from an instrument.

hang tight on the top selection, good stuff seems to pop up every few months. That said, tops like the purple reverse bursts are mostly Maple burls. Not often is buckeye used for that desired effect. They are also pre bleached.

I love the buckeye over the maple burl. And from what I’ve seen of those pre-bleaches tops with the purple, I greatly preferred the non-bleached. It blends in with the wood grain better while on the bleached ones the purple stands out on top too much for my taste. Hope it’ll be a gem!

I kinda like the bleached better. But I’m into bright colors.

Are those two examples the same wood?

My fantasy Dingwall would be a AB 2 with the f hole, flame maple in a jewel bright green stain. Or blue. Or maybe red. Passive.
Maybe try the Wenge wenge neck and board. Unmarked except for a color matched D at the 12th.

I can see how it would be hard to nail down details once I’m confronted with all the choices.

I really like the reverse bursts.

both gorgeous! I like the top better myself.
That said, I’d put money that both of those are bleached. The top top has a lot of burl in it but also a lot of flame. It actually wouldn’t surprise me if that is also a maple burl top, just heavy on the burl compared to the other one(I’ve seen specs labelled incorrectly before). Either way it’s freaking gorgeous.

My last build is I bleached buckeye and it’s quite a bit different then both of these but that was my intention.
