So I took a ride to John Fox Bass in NH yesterday to lay hands on some Dingwalls. He had 3 DRoc standards, a bunch of 4 & 5 string Chinese NG3s (?) and some customs as well. I think the DRoc is what I’d like to get but I didn’t like the colors of the two that were available for sale. He did have exactly what I wanted, but it was already sold.
I didn’t find the fanned frets an issue at all, especially because I don’t think I’ve ever ventured beyond the 15th fret in public. The 4 strings felt fantastic and maybe I’m interested in them but I don’t need another 4 string bass at this point. It could be my imagination or my unfamiliarity with 5 strings in general, but the 5 string versions of the same bass seemed to sound different. With the possible exception of some very expensive basses, the 37” B string sounded better than shorter strings. My simple, quick test is to play low E & F on the B and E strings. Very consistent on the Dingwalls.
Meanwhile, I gather that John Fox is persona non grata with the hierarchy of Talk Bass. I got John’s version of that sad story, but I don’t really understand the conflict. It’s a shame, because I think he would be an asset to the TB community. I’m going to post about my visit. Not sure if that’s controversial.

He was an asset to the community for sure. He literally got banned for offering assistance is the short version.

he still is an asset to the community just not in the community at this point. Many of us who know him or have had interactions with him often suggest his services as a resource to folks asking about certain products.

there is nothing controversial about sharing your experiences about visiting a bass shop IMO.

I feel like some wenge necks recently have really been accenting the laminates. Skunk stripish. I like it. Also seems the wenge neck/maple board is gaining more traction. That’s a beautiful bass and the best usage of ghost blocks IMO.

I purposely tried (unsuccessfully) to avoid stuff that was realistically too expensive. I didn’t try very many of the custom Dingwalls. The price of an import Dingwall seems high to me. But I know I’m living in the past. I was starving when I left after 4 hours of looking at basses. I stopped at a McDonald’s and bought a quarter pounder and small fries for $8.90! And it sucked too!

yeah, nothing good is cheap. Even not good things aren’t cheap anymore.

I wonder if rather than a new model it's new neck options, I've seen comments that the bass on the left there apparently has a roasted Ash neck?

I've been checking out the Neck Illusions fret markers to spice up my NG3's. I've seen a few posts on here with them - are they difficult to install/remove? Can you "feel" them at all? Some of the patterns look pretty neat.

The AB2 slayed again last night. I've been getting a lot of compliments on my sound after gigs lately. I'll admit it took me a little while to get used to the tone of the all-wenge neck, this was a first for me. Super stoked now though.

How often do you guys oil your wenge boards? I don't change strings much since I'm using flats.

I don’t believe the wenge boards need oiling due to the waxy nature of it.

I was thinking of doing the same (inlays) for my D-bird. I think the subtle green in the abalone markers will complement the aquamarine sparkle finish.

In international trade is the original price reduced with the taxes from selling country or will the buyer pay double taxes?

I'm very tempted by the Super P4..... maybe I should buy it and sell my J5 again..

As am I, the only thing I'm not sure on is the block inlays.

Here's a quote from the Dingwall pamphlet that came with my AB2:

"Oiled bodies and fingerboards can be cleaned with a few drops of quality lemon oil on a paper towel. We use Formby's Brand. The back of the neck should receive a light coat of paste wax every couple of months. Using a paper towel, wipe on just enough to coat the neck lightly and buff off after 1 or 2 minutes. We use Kiwi Neutral shoe polish, which is a high quality water resistant wax. NEVER use furnish polish."

There are no taxes on used things so you'll have to pay import duty, If you're looking at new things then tax is not included in North American prices.

You just made me significantly less self conscious about my obsessive hand washing. I'm the same way, I won't pick up my bass without a thorough had washing and drying. It gets annoying sometimes but I can't stop myself.

I'm pretty sure the wenge necks are have a clear coat, they aren't oil/wax that refers to the really old necks. My 2013 wenge neck has never had anything done to it other than a quick wipe down, still looks perfect.

Someone in LA just listed 3 four string Supers on Reverb. I wish I could afford any of them.

I just sold something that freed up enough cash to cover the Super P but I earmarked that cash for a very rare synth I am picking up.

Guess I will work with Alper on a PG for my SJ4 instead and wait for my # to be called down the road for my Super P that’s in the queue.

Well that made my decision for me hahaha. I've been in the fence about buying that one. The weight is what's got me hesitant. My droc4 hits 7.1lbs on my luggage scale and it was like mid to high 9s

Glad I could help 9.6 lbs according to them. That’ll do. John had mentioned that the DRoc 4s were often in the 7 lb. range.

Yea I got spoiled with light basses. My headless 5 is 6.4lbs. I don't mind 8s but I think 9 is my new max.
