Dingwall Owners Club

I don’t think I’m ready to be trying other strings yet on my DRoc 5, but I’m curious about flatwounds for this thing. My favorite 4 string at present is. j with TI flats, though I might try roundwounds again at some point.

I noticed that Payson offers their own 5 string set. Has anyone tried them? What kind of flats are they similar too?

Payson also offers a 5 string TI set. Are these just the regular TI set that happens to fit 37-34 fanned Dingwalls? I also read somewhere that Fret Nation would make up a 5 string flat set. Are they different gauges than the stock 5 string set?

I'm going to try some cobalt flats on my 4 string.

if you search back through this thread there is a fair amount of convo on flats.
Paysons are great IMO. Like most quality flats they require a bit of a break in period again IMO but for long scale they are pretty darn great.

You have to be cautious about non MS strings on the long scale as often the taper doesn’t quite make it to the nut on the 37” B

I believe Jason swaps out the A string for a different gauge and makes sure the B and E are the longest scale TI offers. Presumably, Payson has done the work to make sure the TI flat's he's selling will fit perfectly on a long scale Dingwall, as well.

It was a good mail day.

Just got word today that my ABI is slated for final assembly next week. I might be less than 2 weeks from delivery. Woo Hoo! Looking forward to my upcoming NBD.

That said, I played my NG-3 at a killer gig last Friday. What a pleasure of a bass to play. We got video footage of most all of our set and it really sounded good throughout. From aggressive sounding to kind of jazzy, it was there.

If you decide you want to try a set of TI flats from Jason I bought a set used (barely) on here from gustobassman on this thread and haven't even used them and probably won't. Impulse buy but I'm not really a flats guy.

Look for Eugene’s excellent Payson strings shootout on YouTube.

My new ABI 4-string has arrived, and I am beyond stoked! Northern ash body, quilted maple top (bleached, Whalepool Fade, wenge accent), roasted ash neck (the first one out in the wild!), Mac ebony fingerboard, FD3's (with switches), Glock pre, Hipshot Xtender, blue Luminlay side dots and Speedo Bars. Initial playtesting is even better than I had expected (and I've played a bunch of Dingwalls). The notes just explode out of this thing, and the neck feels incredible. Can't wait to get some quality hours in on this bad boy!

Amazing!!!! Congratulations! That roasted ash is tinted like wenge and that wenge contrast layer looks amazing with those blues, especially on the darker blue. Beauty fretboard too!!! Wow!!

Wow, beautiful. Not normally a fan of the fades, but this one looks like a cross-section of deep water. Very cool.

What made you decide to go with an ash neck? I don't know that I've seen many, if any, ash necks before.
Does it just have their normal neck finish on it? It's so chocolatey brown.
How does it feel under the thumb?

From what I understand, torrefaction (roasting) makes the wood super stable. If Dingwall were to decide to offer roasted maple for necks and boards and roasted ash for bodies, I would be clamoring to put together a deposit ASAP (although, I kind of am already).
