If you watch videos close you can see some prototypes also
Nice! I honestly discovered periphery through the NG. Liked the bass read about whose model it was. Didn't even look into him for maybe a year after that. Then looked up who he played for. Was really happy to hear they came from my hometown. If I had not joined the army in 2007 I 100% would have seen them and been a fan from their early years.

i am tempted to try a darkglass X range of pedals. Right now i run an adam… which is great with the low b. I suspect it will do well with f# also. The various darkglass pedals all manage the clean/distorted hi/low signals differently… and i want to play with them.
I highly recommend the X7 for ultra low stuff. I haven’t tried the ADAM, but the X7 can make drop E (octave below standard E) sound monstrous.

Yeah the x is tempting. The plan was to use a simple version of the x after the adam so i could still use clean/dirty signals into my biamp setup.

the adam splits signals to clean/dirty and allows a blend. The clean signal is balanced to fill out/compress the bottom end. The x is basically an adjustable high and low pass filter with distortion on the high pass filter only. So one signal but you chose at what frequency (and up) you start the distortion. What i was warned on the x however is that it scoops around the crossover (x). Running it with the adam set on clean should be a best of both worlds however.

when green bass arrives i will try the adam out and if i am unhappy… i will get an x for fun. But given nolly helped design the adam… i do suspect it will be just fine. By blending and eqing and mixing clean/dirty… i have similar control to the x… clean lows and distorted mids/highs.

If the x works great on it’s own… if will work great infront of the adam also.

So for the wenge crew ...how much do you think the neck changes the sound or is it more just stability?

The wenge fingerboard basses I have the notes seem to pop off the fretboard. I'd imagine a neck would do that ten fold!
The notes definitely “pop off” my Super P.
It’s got a very quick and direct response

shag yeah dude, how's the knee holding up?
Not that good at the moment. I had to tape it after the show on Friday.
Jumping and dancing around on stage are a different kind of stress than doing squats, deadlifts etc at the gym.

It’s feeling a bit better now that its taped up, though

i am in the camp of “same pickups/strings/electronics/setup” same sound.

i just love the look.

note: have never tried to test it. Of interest my ng has maple… my yellow ab1 is wenge neck, alder body… and my 6 string will be wenge/walnut. I have the strings to just put a fresh set on all and test. But i probably wont. Lol.

same. Found the ng… loved it. Searched nollys work and it was right up my alley. I was so impressed with his understanding/approach to sound/tone that i got his adam pedal also.

So from a ng2 to an ab1 5, then a ab1 6… and a darkglass adam… likely microtubes x. Also bought all peripheries albums. I am an example of why cross marketing works.

and my next jazz bass will be a super j. Actually that is how it all started… i wanted a american jazz… someone mentioned that there was a great canadian bass brand… i fell in love with a super j… then discovered a ng2… cause previous 5’ves i hated for Various reasons… and had no 5 in my collection.

i took the risk ordering one without ever playing one. The ng was the best bass i had ever owned (but not the most expensive by a long shot)… so that was that. Fanboy ever since.

Nothing against Nolly - I didn’t dig the ADAM but in all fairness, I didn’t dedicate myself to exploring the depths of it but borrowed one for a month - I can see the use case but not quite for me. That is pretty much my sentiment for most things Nolly/Periphery related.
As I am thinking about it - Nolly did a lot to define the sounds of a decade worth of newer bands. That bass tone (I get that), but the drums being samples on recordings etc is what I don’t dig. I feel like the overall influence on production has been to digitize/DAW the process more and the recordings feel less like people playing together (or something like that). Right time, right place more digital native.
Ultimately, I guess I like my metal more old school or heavier than those guys. Opinions are like a-holes though…

I do dig the X7 a lot for big metal tones. It grinds so nicely with my Dingwalls.

yeah fair. The adam sounds HUGE to my ears, but does not do very subtle overdrive as well. Mind you at its lowest setting it is perfect for basic roc levels of grit imho. Nollys setting is great also… but much beyond that is unusable fuzz imho… but than fuzz was never my thing.

pretty sure i will get an x to add in. Just to try it.

I am not so into the details of recording/etc (i like what i like… pretty simple) but periphery is an interesting story of guys who went from metal forums to pro albums doing their own production/recording. I think the represents a change in music… the newer generation has a lot of computer savy and are doing remarkable recordings on their own. These days it is a pretty low barrier to access professional recording tools… vs 30-40 years ago.

i think that diy approach and social media has allowed many niche metal bands to find an audience without having to be a “flavour of the month band” that needs to impress a record label. I think it fosters originality and variety.

it is also interesting to see bands touring with minimal backline… some in ear monitors, axe fx, and midi. Then all the social media and product endorsements. Things are changing.

Not to wax too much poetic but i was a firm “fender jazz or ric 4003” guy… why would i want a modern bass when they did it right 40 years ago? Same for amps.

that is part of why i like dingwall so much. Fender cant really change a p bass or buyers would riot. all the fender type bases… many are lovely… but are just refinements on a set design.

Dingwall is a newer brand vs say fender so was able to say “what made classic bases classic” and “how can we make it even better?” They had to build their market… but in 40 years i think their bases will be added to the likes of p basses, j basses, t birds, 4003’s, etc. I.e classic designs.

This is what I thought when I got my NG. Even though it's a stripped-down workhorse compared to some of their other models, it still shows that Dingwall's designs are an important development in the field.

I ordered my first custom shop Dingwall… bank account is mad at me, my brain is happy. I can’t wait!

Super J 5 3x
P-Tone/FDV/FDV
Glock 18v
Blacked out maple neck with wenge board
Color matched block inlays
Swamp ash body with maple Burl x-top
Reverse burst
Blue luminlay side dots
Matching headstock
Black hardware and integrated strap locks

I haven’t decided yet on the body or burst color but I have some ideas, just gotta pull the trigger and make a decision.

Awesome!! Congratulations :hyper:

So Dingwall hive mind.
My new band is getting close to being gig ready & I've managed to convince my wife that I need another 5 string Dingwall as a backup/something to switch out from time to time

The question is......... a second D-roc 5 string or an NG/Combustion 5 for Dingwall #2?

For those with both, how do they work with each other ( level wise, sitting in the mix etc. ) if played on the same gig?
