I'd like to amend my previous Kalium complaint. No issues with lack of bass. Not sure what I was hearing the other day.

also, I ordered more strings from them and Skip called me about an hour later to verify string length. They shipped the next day.

Jason at FN described them to me as the punch of rounds without the string clack - Id say that a pretty fair assessment. There is more tension than the Payson Groundwounds I was using, the E and D are slightly thicker than the Dingwall Nickel rounds.

Pressurewounds are very high tension because GHS are high tension anyway because they use a large core wire, plus Pressurewounds actually start out as a larger string before they are compressed down so that makes them stiffer yet. Probably the stiffest strings I've ever used. Should work great for downtuning though!

Cool, thanks! Probably not for me unless they come in 0.170 or about, but it is an interesting idea. I assume they have longscale options?

I think dadderio makes branded dingwall strings now… but if i recall ghs used to make them… so that all makes sense. I wonder how many are needed for a minimum run.

one of the benefits of “me too” multiscale bases is increased string options.

Hello all. Apologies in advance: I've always ignored pickup talk in this thread as I never intended to switch mine out. Yesterday I played my first Super J and it sounded incredible. It had FDV pickups and S/P toggles.

Can you help me understand what my 2016 ABZ might have from the factory? I'm guessing it has something different (other than the shell shape). My current understanding is that I could get FDVs into my old shells on this bass. Is that right? Thanks!

They’re likely FD3s. I don’t know if the shop is still making pickups in that shape… my gut says yes because they’re a standard EMG shell, but you could get a definitive answer from any dealer.

There are simple wiring changes you could make to those pickups, putting them in series. Easy, quick, mod that is easily reversed if you don’t like it. If you want to get fancy, add switches.

I put Dingwall Ptone pups in the neck positions, if I could find them.

I was on the fence with an AB-1 fiver until I put the Ptone in. Plus wiring the bridge to series. Then it was perfect.

I purchased a pair of square-shell FDV's through my Dingwall dealer, but it was a couple of years ago. I don't know if they're still available.

Could you help me understand which one I prefer? I'm not sure which way was which with the toggles, but one setting gave me a way snappier way scoopier sound.

When it comes to pickup positions, the parallel setting gives more of a scooped sound than the series position does. Is it the same for each individual pickup? (I should mention, the Super J was x2 pickups)

I have a 2013 square-shell ABZ. I believe it has FD3's, same as yours.

I enjoyed the pickups as wired. Very smooth and open, but not enough "oomph" for my P-bass-oriented ears.

I did the coil switch mod, and once I set both pickups to series coils, I never looked back. It doesn't have the slight mid-scoop and spike that I hear with the pickup switch in series pickups. Just a push in the low mids that gives it more heft. Still has that trademark Dingwall clarity.

Mind you, series pickups and series coils together has noticeably more growl and punch.

Broadly speaking, parallel will be more scooped or less punchy than series.
