Dingwall Owners Club

Hi everyone, sorry to crash the owners forum but I am on the verge of ordering an Afterburner and trying to decide between AB1 vs AB2. I haven’t been able to find either model anywhere to test out although I have played a combustion. I’m curious how the body sizes of the 1 and 2 compare? Are they the same thickness or is the AB2 deeper to accommodate the tone chambers? Any other insights would be appreciated!

Bassically the same size - the AB2 is just lighter. If I was doing a build, and I could choose, I'd pick an AB2.

Hi Tom,

I just took possession of this bass a few weeks ago.

I went with the ABI. It's plenty light and sounds great. As opposed to an ABII, the ABI platform allows for some cool solid body effects. That said, if you want that semi hollow body thing, can't go wrong with an ABII.

IIRC, Bass Player or Bass Gear mag did a review of both a few years ago and described the AB2 as having more "air" and delicacy in the tone.

I've owned both and I'd agree with that description:
I tend to play rock and heavier genres, and the solid AB1s are more my speed.
But the AB2 that I had was drop-dead gorgeous and the sound would work better in mixes with a bit more space and ambience.

Congrats! Killer old school combustion too! I see you swapped the knobs....feel the weight on the old ones? LOL
I was gonna buy some DW ones for mine ....saw the price and thought F it....used some plastic knobs off an old guitar pedal and it worked killer and lightened it up a bunch too!

I probably would have pulled the trigger and sold my Blue D Roc custom for that AB but I just can't do maple fretboards sadly :( What a beauty though!

Thank you! I was lucky that my combustion came with the DW knobs from previous owner who happened to be an ex-employee. I have looked up before...it's definitely a bit hard for me to justify spending $20usd per knob as well...

It's actually my first time purchasing a bass with maple fingerboard as well...always been a non-maple person but this AB2 is just too pretty to pass for me...The FB feels nicer than I thought! Super smooth. Lemme know if you were interested in a trade in the future! I'd love to test out a d-roc too!:bassist:

Can any 5-string NG or combustion owners out there recommend a hard case that they've personally had hands-on and/or used in person? I've ordered two different generic cases that should have fit by the measurements, but neither actually worked out. Sadly, shops around here don't seem to stock anything these days so I can't go try one. I'm specifically looking for a hard case. Thanks in advance - cheers!

(FWIW I did try searching before I posted. I looked through about 200 pages of this thread before giving up and just posting. Apologies.)

A musicman stingray case fits an Ab. It’s a bit floppy thou and needs a bit of extra padding in it.

How is this for luck: My new bass was about to be shipped from boston area to me in the east coast of canada.

It Just happens that my buddy in boston is visiting his family up my way… and arriving this weekend. So i had the bass shipped to him… and he will take it over the boarder with his family.

translation: i will probably get it just as fast… but will avoid 15% tax (about 1000$ Canadian). Saves the seller shipping also. Plus my buddy works from home so no worry about ups shenanigans like signing for it and leaving it at the door.

oh… and my birthday is friday. Stars are aligning.
