Later I got a custom 6-way. Also tried switchable pickup internal wiring (parallel or series).

Now back to stock and only 2 pickups because while 3 pickups in 9 different settings was cool (the mod in the link above), I realized everything I really wanted was achieved with 2 pickups and the stock 4-way (and the pickups wired Parallel internally). But all the experimenting along the way was great fun and all mod itches were thoroughly scratched :)

Alongside this will be the Dingwall NG2 rotary switch allowing for four total combinations of the neck pickup and the 3 way toggle- series, parallel, neck solo, 'bridge' solo (allowing me to select both bridge pickups, or each one individually with the toggle). So I will gain the ability to solo each pickup individually, still have the ability to run 'droc' mode (two back pickups in parallel, in series with the neck pickup), as well as an all new 'triple parallel' mode and the ability to run the two front pickups in both series and parallel. The only thing Ill lose out on is the back two pickups in series but I really don't use that mode anyways.

We’re of similar feelings about the 6 position. Love the options but would rather something simpler. We’ve talked about using a 2x plus toggle but have not done testing yet. I’ll be interested to see how you like it.

I was a Dingwall owner before there was a Dingwall Owner’s Club. Foolishly sold that bass, and have been pining for a replacement for 15 years.

The time has finally come, and I nailed down a build slot. It’ll be an AB1 3x, but they have yet to finalize specs and cut wood.

I’ve been going back-and-forth about the speedo bars or just the plain dots on the treble side of the neck for fret markers. My old AB1 had nothing on the fretboard.

For those that have experience with both, or any sort of commentary, is it easier to see and navigate upper register playing with the speedos or plain dots on the fretboard?

I really liked the clean, unmarked wenge board on my early AB-1’s. The side dots are plenty, and extra nice if Luminlay.

On the other hand, the pearloid blocks on the Super J were awesome with a white pearl pickguard. Made for an old school look. Because they slant with the frets, it’s kind of like the speedo bar thing.

The Birdseye maple fretboard on my Super P is stunning, with old style dots and Luminlay side markers.

The wenge boards with blocks that match the body color are pretty cool.

So many choices!

I have the plain dots on my Z3 and combustion...have shortly owned an ABII with speedos. I'd prefer the speedos bars!

Hello bass gods,
I purchased a combustion 5 a few months back and to be honest I am not loving the tone.I like it in series position, but I am finding myself fighting for a tone. Does the tone capsule preamp change the sound that much? Just looking for more kick.

Do you know what generation Combustion you have? The very early ones with square pickup shells were more traditional sounding. I changed mine for FD3's and it made a big difference.

The DGTC is a 'colored' pre. When I was playing an NG-2, I always backed off the bass a good bit and the mid- bass a little less. I prefer the Glockenklang pre myself. I highly recommend trying some Payson nickel round strings. For lack of a better term, they sound 'beefier' to me. Still plenty of high-end, but somehow fuller sounding than the Dingwall sets. :cool:

Cool to hear of your upcoming build. I took possession of my ABI back it late May.

I think the Speedo bars on a Dingwall are almost a must. I have a NG-3 also and navigating the upper register can be challenging on this bass. With the Speedos on the ABI, it's way better for me.

Sorry to be that guy, but just buy a SushiBox pedal, and your tone problems will be fixed. If you need a DI, the Finally; otherwise the Underground Accelerator is my favorite, but I've "only" got 3, the other being a Slampegg.

Kick as in what, exactly? We need something a little less nebulous to go on. More lows? More mids? Do you have 2 or 3 pickups?

Try different strings and adjusting your pickup heights.
