I was a Dingwall owner before there was a Dingwall Owner’s Club. Foolishly sold that bass, and have been pining for a replacement for 15 years.

The time has finally come, and I nailed down a build slot. It’ll be an AB1 3x, but they have yet to finalize specs and cut wood.

I’ve been going back-and-forth about the speedo bars or just the plain dots on the treble side of the neck for fret markers. My old AB1 had nothing on the fretboard.

For those that have experience with both, or any sort of commentary, is it easier to see and navigate upper register playing with the speedos or plain dots on the fretboard?

I do think the speedos look fantastic. Standard face dots I’m indifferent about visually speaking. They’re just there, or not.

Technically speaking the speedos are a great visual reference.
Another factor that comes to mind when talking fret markers is the visual aid offered to your fellow musicians. Depending on your situation, improv or originals or perhaps teaching it can be quite the asset. An example, I took Skype lessons with some one and they had an unmarked Ebony board. Even if the 12th had a mark in it it could have saved some moments.

I purchased a combustion 5 a few months back and to be honest I am not loving the tone.I like it in series position, but I am finding myself fighting for a tone. Does the tone capsule preamp change the sound that much? Just looking for more kick.

+1 on fine-tuning pickup heights. Should've thought of that myself, with the bass being new to you...

I will try the pickup heights . I ordered the tone capsule a few minutes ago. The bass is going through my mess subway rig. Basically all of my bass guitars have modified pickups, I think I’m addicted to shopping.

Killer rig. The 800+ should be giving you all kinds of “kick”. I want to get my hands on the 212. I imagine it speaks very well paired with the 115.
I assume you’ve adjusted the HPF and voicing controls with the dingwall?

I’m curious, that “kick” you’re looking for, could it also be described as thump? Could it be possible your looking for a bit more of a low mid push?

It is by far the best built bass I have, I’m excited to make it a monster

Hahah. Now you have me at even more of a loss. Generally speaking Modern Dingwalls excel at grit and texture. Perhaps the DGTC will help you get that. It does do a really good job of bringing that out of a bass.

that said coming back to your rig, I know you’ve dialled it in quite well but I am curious about the voicing knob where you have that set at? Oh and back to the pick up heights too. What kind of spacing you have from your strings to pick ups?

Kick implies bottom end, a feeling you get in your chest or guts when you play down lower.

Texture or grit possibly imply more upper midrange content or additional overdrive/distortion.

Do you use a compressor in your signal chain at all?

I do not use a compressor. Every once and a while I put it through my c4 synth pedal and that’s about it.
