Idk I've never encountered any pedal that will just 'fix' a fundamentally flawed tone (yes yes it's subjective etc.) from a bass. If it ain't doing it for you straight, a pedal ain't gonna fix it. Pedals and effects are like seasoning on a steak init - like if the steak is rubbery and overcooked, no seasoning will save it.

I'm not a pro by any means but I agree with this assesment.

I would normally agree. I bought my D-Roc used from someone here who gave up on it after adding a preamp to it, stating it was just kinda bland sounding. I thought it sounded good, but not great, but thought that's okay, I bought it for it's light weight on those sore back nights. Then I played it through my just discovered SushiBox Finally and it became fantastic and will be in my Halloween gig rotation. But what do I know, only been playing 55 years and gigging 39 years :cool:

Are you talking about the Slampeg or Tube DI pedal?

OK, I finally got the Matte Metallic Gold NG3 from Anderton's. A bit of an ordeal with DHL, I am not a fan.

But I have it now! I just gave it the once over and plugged it in at low volume for about 10 minutes, tweaked the action, etc. I'll mess with the truss rod and pickup heights later, but it plays really nicely already. Nice looking instrument.

Immediate reactions:
  • The finish is really nice.
  • It feels light! 9.2 lbs I believe.
  • I'm sad I can't use a right-angle jack into the bass.
  • String spacing is very comfortable.
  • I like pickup selector position 2 the most and position 3 the least, in solo practice anyway.
  • The black pickguard is nice, but I'm thinking of taking it off.
  • It plays very easily. I tried out a bit of Teentown and was surprised how easy it was on both hands.
  • Not sure how I feel about the DG preamp.
  • I feel like I would like a passive tone in addition to the active eq.

I recently got the gold in a 6'er... I love the color. Debating which Neck Illusions stickers to try out..

Regarding passive tone and a different preamp flavor - if you can live without a mid knob, the Nordstrand 2B preamp is a great choice. One of my NG3's has Super Fatty 2 pickups + Nordy 2B and I have that bass wired up vol-rotary-passive tone-bass-treble. No drilling, all 5 holes are used. You may need to enlarge the holes slightly but thats easy with a slow hand and a reamer.

I had seen a video or two with Sheldon talking about it, the one I’m remembering was actually your interview with him! Great interview by the way. Sounds like it’s partially due to supply inconsistency over time with Wenge, and some level of concern that it may not be able to be offered longer term, but he also speaks highly about the tonal characteristics.

It’s an intriguing option, I have a Super J on order with a Wenge neck at the moment.
