Hi guys and gals, is there a large difference between the dark glass tone capsule and the
Emg pre in the combustion?
Will it make a big difference?

I would say yes. Maybe more dependant on your play style. If you play softly with your fingers perhaps not as much. If you play with lots of attack you will notice it more. That said, if you play with heavy attack and want some more grind perhaps trying a DG microtubes ljne and pedal would add a satisfactory amount of clank

I actually just received my darkglass tone capsule and now I have to figure out how to install it. I am very excited to make the switch. I usually play with lots of attack so I think it will be a good fit. I will keep you posted

I don’t recall if it’s a direct drop in. You may have to ream the holes a bit. No big deal, just a thought

I’ve been gassing hard for one of these lately and my Z3-6 still hasn’t arrived. Yours is sick. I’ve got a Fender AO P but want to go full fanned fret. Modern meets vintage. Not that I need it right now, but still. Me wants it! Beautiful, man! I’ve been wondering what these sound like! And only 4K!? For all that!? After my nearly 10k Z order that actually sounds cheap!

Agreed that they are different, quite a bit in my opinion. The DG has a lot on tap, you don't typically need to boost a lot of any of the frequencies (unless that's what you're going for). It can get very clanky quickly and my signal path gets overdriven easily if I boost the mids too much.
I rarely use the tone controls other than a slight dip in mids or minimal boost of high mids. Mostly I leave the controls flat but switch the preamp on for the little bit of sparkle it brings out.

I find the higher treble frequency of the EMG to be more usable and musical for what I like. My Combustion sounds great with the treble dimed for mostly anything, rock/metal/pop especially. I run it flat when I'm doing stuff with banjos/acoustic guitars. Typically I'll leave the bass control flat as I use different pedal preamps and handle bass control there.

Hey guys. Just got my DROC today. Playing some finger style Black Sabbath on the all pup selection was sublime. Love it. Gorgeous looking, feels fast and the pickups are very articulate. Just gives the sense of being an easy play bass.

I have searched and do see information regarding the pup selection choices. Bridge , Bridge Middle etc. But Can anyone describe in words what the tone you get / expect in each?. It may be a while before I can play at volume, so just wondering. Because to me, at least initially the all pup selection feels like a p bass tone to me, as an example.

To my ears, on my ABZ, Bridge = growly, lots of highs, lots of articulation. Bridge/Middle = Music Man. Big, aggressive, angry, out there in your face. Bridge/Neck = jazz bass with both pickups on, in parallel. Smooth, warm sounding, very detailed. Neck = Pbass, pretty much.

I was thinking about swapping out the selector for a 6-way one but to be honest, that would just make things too complicated and would be more than I'd reasonably use.

First selection is the pbass tone, too muddy for most of what I want.

Then the middle pickup, the sweet spot for 90% of what I play.

Third, middle and bridge MM style.

Fourth, bridge solo. Too nasal for me but I haven't played with it that much - yet.

I agree that I’ve not gotten a P bass vibe at all from the all on setting. It’s more of a really low mid/bass forward Jazz setting IMO. I use it for deep round designs.

Thanks. I managed to knock the volume up which always reveals goodness.

This is a phenomenal instrument. I can’t express my delight. After an hour or so I felt like I was already playing better (faster / smoother). The setup seems spot on. Super bag too. Bonus.

it’s just so articulate. You can hear everything. Absolutely adore it. It’s displaced my Stingray (sold) and my
p bass is now listed. Never loved the ray. My Ric and G&L L2K are likely staying though. Both are tone monsters but the DROC is probably overall better , if I had to only have one.

I do wonder what the bridge and neck pup would sound like. Seems odd that it’s not an option to me.

You're totally right. I think the smaller frets lends itself to ease of play-ability and maybe lower action capability? I think that makes sense doesn't it? Lower profile frets would allow the string to be lower

Apparently Lee Sklar put them on to Banjo frets.

No, action isn’t affected by the hsize of the frets because you’re measuring between the top of the fret to the bottom of the string. They just do a really good job of making sure the fretboards are flat and the frets are leveled properly.
