Dingwall Owners Club

Ah ok but it seems like Dingwall pups are made a certain way to make them sound the way they do. So getting pups which don’t sound like them would maybe make guys not want to them get them ?

they have become hard to come by it seems. Dingwall may have have some shells hiding in a corner still for the odd replacement?

The square shells ended in the ABZ and combustions around 2018 so all basses could conform to the rounded shells.
The factory FD3s sounded dynamite in my ABZ but I still had to chase my idea of installing 40DCXs in this beast! No regurts

Looking for opinions. I just ordered a Combustion and they are going to install the 6-way selector before they ship it out. Configured like so:

1 - B/M
2 - B/N
3 - B/M/N
4 - B solo
5 - M solo
6 - N solo

All of those in parallel. They mentioned they can add 3 toggle switches 1 for each pick to set each to series or parallel.

The options are pretty limitless if I do but I'm not sure I want to modify the stock bass with something i can't undo

Just looking for thoughts/opinions

TBH this is my 2nd Combustion and when I played the other one I pretty much lived in B/M parallel

Thanks!
The thing about the mods you are talking about is that the switch is easily reversible and adding the switches is definitely a mod that holds/retains value. It is an up charge from the dingwall to do this but adds a really nice benefit to fine tuning your fav settings.
If you are concerned for resale, no one will consider this a poor choice of Modifications.

There is this song I wanted to learn how to play for ages but I never really got that far into it beyond transcribing the entire thing from the piano into my C standard tuning on the bass. Well, I tried playing it on both my basses and I quite like how the fanned Dingwall feels while playing this song. This piece goes all the way from the open C on my fourth to the D on my 2nd string, so this thing takes me places all over this fanned fretboard.

I do not really have much to add beyond that, just saying that I am enjoying the workout on the fanned fret and in comparison, this felt awkward to try to learn on my parallel fret bass, if that is worth anything.

I will post a recording here once I have learnt this piece well.

Sick looking bass! What would you say you the EMG's give you that the FD's didn't?

Also, is the tone control an EMG plug and play part part or is that worked into the circuit after the fact?

I have an older Combustion with those pickups. It's a ways back in this thread but the newer offerings of FDV pickups should fit in the square shells if you wanted to change them.

I was going to do a swap but decided against it. I really like their tone, and I also really like my NG's. It's less aggressive but that's not to say you can't get aggressive sounds out of it.
I’m looking at an older ABZ bass on sale now which has those style pups. But I want the FDV pups as they sound more aggressive and not as wide as the standard FD3 which sound great but I think they are a bit wider sounding.

I'm pretty sure you can fit FDV's into the square shells from info that's been posted here, though I have no direct experience unfortunately.

Can anyone here confirm? Or the mastermind himself @Sheldon D.?

FDVs can definitely fit the square shells; I had a Combustion with them. Whether or not Dingwall has those square shells or will sell you a set of coils to put into your own shells, I don’t know. You can email the shop to find out.

The EMGs give me THAT EMG sound!! Smart ass comments aside, they do though. There is a larger bottom end in the DCs. It’s also a more dual humbucker sound like a bongo for example but of course even more like an EMG loaded Spector. I really love the tone of EMGs especially for slapping/tappy stuff

Yes, all the components loaded in the bass are plug and play with EMG. It has. BQC preamp and the active tone to make a drastic tonal change on the fly if wanted…. I had the extra hole so why not. I may go back to the glockenklang it was loaded with or put in a DGTC or maybe something else. It has currently sounded phenomenal with any combo

The last few days' discussion of worship music "grooving" reminded me of this video. It took me a while to find this concert as it seems the upload I used to listen to has been removed. Though the audio quality isn't the best on this one, the bass is clearly audible and articulate. The first 23 minutes or so absolutely slaps, pun intended. ;)

Ok I did it, I got this one. Spoke with the owner and the pups are the FDV ones. These I’ve wanted to try for AWHILE. But I cant wait to get this one. View attachment 4854335
Nice!

Accounting for indoors vs sunlight, that's the perfect 4-string sister to my Honey Amberburst 5-string, which also has a maple neck:

I added coil tap switches for both pickups, and the Sklar switch.

I rarely take either pickup out of the series coil position, but it's still my bass for all seasons!

Yeah I was considering adding pickup switches to my ABZ but I felt I got enough variety with the rotary selector and the Glock EQ. It has a very very distinct sound in any case but versatile enough to do pretty much anything, so why make it more complicated?

How did you find the sound prior to that coil switches ?
I was thinking of having her put like the Droc basses cause they are LOUD. I just want to make sure she’s loud. The FDV Pups are punchy and have a great grind to them.

That made me think....

Where does the 'Dingwall sound' come from? You know, that ultra-modern, punchy, grindy sound.

I mean, my bass is made from exactly the same materials as my girlfriend's Warwick Corvette (ash body, wenge neck & fingerboard) but the two basses couldn't sound more different, even in passive. Is it the pickups?

I’d say IMHO it has to be the pups and any preamps used. Plus the player and their style.

Dingwall uses ash. Warwick uses ash. But Dingwall's ash is not the same as Warwick's ash :)

I really think that has a lot to do with it. The woods that Sheldon chooses and voices has a lot to do with it. Pickups are a big part of it too, but I don't feel that preamps are a major part. All of my Dingwalls are passive and they have more output and sound bigger than any of my active basses.

oh wuao cool, didn’t know you could use differing types of ashes for building a bass. As for the pup part I agree my Droc is way louder than one of my active basses. The others have hotter output due to being 18V lol. But since I got my Droc they've pretty sat.
