Thx - I absolutely loved the AB-1 neck I had years ago, and Sheldon was saying in a video AMA that the Z is maybe a millimeter thinner front to back. I have a build slot in but have yet to verify what the build will be. Vascillating between Sklar, tricked-out AB, or a more plainclothes Z. Fun problem to have!

my biggest beef(only beef)with the 5 string Z neck was my tendency to pull the G string off the neck up around the 12th. I had to be conscious of my technique to avoid it. That said, on the six string that doesn’t happen anymore.

For those who liked N+M, did you only try parallel? For those that didn't like it, did you only try series? Did Bill try both?

On my Super J I've got a 6-way in there now that allows for N+M in parallel and while it is definitely mega fat I wouldn't describe it as muddy.

Quoting myself for context. I definitely like it but for my tastes I wouldn't say I love it. I've never tried it in series. On live dates I'm almost exclusively B+M in parallel when it's loud, and B+N when it's mellow or sparse. Very occasionally I'll go neck solo for the P thing. The N+M in parallel is definitely not something I reach for very often, but if I wanted it deep and fat with reduced midrange response compared to the neck solo option I could definitely see it working quite well.

So, I know where in the build process my Z3 is, because they had to email JFB about a small bit of mineral streaking that turned up after the body shaping. We think it’s on the back, based on the suggested methods they mentioned that would conceal it, and I think that some of the ideas they mentioned sound like they’ll make my Six-String-Skeletor even more awesome looking than it already would be.

I have this on my ABs too.
No idea how others do it, to me it always seemed normal to bend by pronating the hand ?

I had a huge problem with pulling the G string off the neck on my former NG3-5. That might have contributed to me selling it (the main reason was that the neck on the Supers and AB are way way more to my preference). I don’t have that problem at on with my current SJ and AB, not even a hint.

Tried a search and found a few hits - might be a topic to be revisited. Can anyone that cares to comment discuss the difference in neck thickness between a Z model and and AB model? I have AB1 experience to use as a baseline, but have never played a Z.

I understand that the Z does have a thinner thickness front to back. Are we talking like Steve Vai Ibanez super thin or something a little bit more reasonable?

I like it a lot. It is one of the reasons I own a Sklar. I have a Super PJ that had mandolin frets and I love the longer scale Afterburners, so my intent was to have one built with mandolin frets, but they stopped doing that and only have them on the Sklar now. So I found a used Sklar.

That said - an Afterburner with a set of Payson Flats is smoother than butter too and there might as well be no frets on it at all.

You can't go wrong either way.

Lots of flat wounds, TI jazz flats and Paysons, but no tape wounds. Not yet anyway.

Just put Payson flats on the Dbird, they sound great. TI jazz flats on the Super P.

The Payson strings are tailored to Dingwall basses with tapered ends, they go right on with very little setup fiddling.

It won’t happen for a long time. I had flats on it for a while and am now dedicating the bass to rounds. Honestly, I’m hoping Elixir gets their s*** together and starts producing tapered B strings again.

Ok so I got my ABZ 4 bass and it looks AMAZING !!! But then I plugged it in and it was static city. The volume, pickup selector and tone. All had bad static. And before anyone asks yes

Were all checked plugged in my DRoc and no issues. I undid the back plate and was greeted with this. I’m going to have to replace all 3, does anyone know the info on the parts needed and a wiring diagram. This is one of the original ABZ models so I’m not sure if it’s different than the current ones wiring and pot wise. To be honest I’d like to see if I could use the same pots and pickup selector from a DRoc…but any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a sweet 'burner. I'm not sure what you mean by 'static'. The wiring looks good to me. I'm suspecting a problem with the input jack. I'd give it a good cleaning. If that doesn't cure it, I'd pull the jack and check the wiring.
