I first started playing Dingwalls about 10 years ago. I know they have been making fantastic basses for 30 years or so. I think they have really hit a whole ‘notha level over the past 4 or 5 years. The pickups and electronics have evolved over the years. The finishes are like WHOAA and ultimately, consistency is through the roof.
It’s amazing to see a company so dialed in.
I certainly have played MOST of the brands that have interested me over the years. MTD basses are great and I have a friend that has a pile of them. I am good right here.

I definitely agree with you. The ABZ I had years ago was nice, but not on the level of this new one I just got. I think MTD makes phenomenal instruments, and after playing those for so long my usual reaction when I try a new bass is that I'm underwhelmed. I was really surprised and a little shocked at how good the Dingwall was. As you said, they have it dialed in!!! It hasn't happened for me in quite a while, but nothing beats that moment when you play an instrument that really speaks to you. I am glad to be back with Dingwall.

Hopeful question for the hive.... On old (2009) Combustion basses that have the FD-3A pickups and a EMG BTS preamp and a bypass switch, are the pickups passive? I am working on putting my Combustion back to working condition electronics wise. The pots are not correct. So, if the bypass switch is a actual bypass, then that would mean the pickups are passive and I need 500k pots. But if it is not a true active/passive bypass and the pickups are active, then I would need 25k pots.

I was looking for this video all day, and it finally popped up. I’m going to say that it almost certainly is. That D logo should be Luminlay blue, and it appears to be Luminlay, and the masking around the edge leads me to think that they’ve given the same trans purple hard line around the headstock as they did on the body. In the body, it is because the core wood had some mineral staining lines that only emerged with the routing, and that was the solution they suggested and I wholeheartedly approved, so the bass wouldn’t have wood blemishes. Leave it to Dingwall to (it appears) make sure the headstock 100% matches the changed body color plan. Wonderful attention to detail on their part. If I could see the fretboard inlays, I’d know with total certainty that that is mine.

Finally, after a 2 weelk long agonising ordeal involving customs and DHL, I picked up my Combustion last night. Holy poopie it's good. I haven't put it down (well only to reply to emails, stupid work getting on the way of playing!). I have 2 gigs this weekend, so trying to put in a few hours solid practice to get used to the frets.

It actually took all of 15 minutes to get used to it. I also like the way it hangs. I took the matte black pickguard off, and I'll be making a clear perspex one tonight. I'll take pics tomorrow and post them. Hopefully someone will take some pics at one of the gigs and I'll post them here as well.

I get it now... I seriously doubt I'll pick up any of my other basses now... maybe sell them and get another one?

Installed some neck illusion blue and purple swirl blocks last night.

I’d say there’s about $19 worth of bang for the buck. The positioning strips to aid with a tidy install are genius. Super easy. I’m digging the look.

I’ll probably do some Luminlay dots next. The AB will get Luminlay dots as well. Luminlay is a bit more work to install, but huge bang for the buck. Glowing dots are way more fun than stickers.

Looks good! I dig the blocks. Put them on my ‘Bird, too. I also changed the hardware to black.
