I thought the P-tone was the standard now in the PJ. That’s what’s in mine and didn’t specify.

It’s an FDV I just decided to leave it “stock” and see how I like it. I rarely use both pickups, but the parallel mode has some nice bite to it.

If i remember correctly, Bill Eppel (can’t remember his username) had a P-Tone installed in the bridge position of his Super P and he really liked the result.

I had an FDV in mine and switched it to a P-Tone and prefer the P. However if I were to do it again, I'd put a SFII in there.

My Super P came from Bass Buddha in this configuration, as well.

AFAIK, FDVs are standard.

I really enjoy the parallel setting with the P-Tone in the bridge as the two pickups balance very well.

I have a P-Tone in the bridge of my PJ. It's certainly a whole lotta P. I do wonder what it would have been like with a standard bridge PU though.

Thé PTone is now actually listed as ´standard’ on Super PJ somewhere on their website.

I have an older early run SJ5. They didn't even have the 5-string P developed when it came out, but routed it underneath the pickguard so that when they did, they could be converted if wanted. That's exactly what I did which was the intension the whole time. So, the bridge pickup in that bass is the older thinner shell SuperFatty (I) and that bass sounds really thick and even across all strings and the whole neck. Granted, the P pickup is closer the neck (I think it was a quarter inch) than a standard P and the SP's and the bridge pickup is in the 70's position.

When I installed the FDV on the SP5, I thought it sounded a little thin on the treble strings. I thought the P-Tone helped even things out a bit, but I still think that the SFII would be even better, based on my SJ5.

Keep in mind, I never play with the bridge pickup soloed so I don't really care about that tone. I just want to it to sound nice and thick with the P-Pickup and my guess is that that model would be the best to do that.

I made a down payment but actually haven’t decided between a proper SPJ5 and a SJ5 with P tone in the neck position…

Yeah, it's a great bass! They've made refinements over the years, but that doesn't always mean they're better; just different. (well, sometimes better, sometimes more cost and labour efficient - often both)

It would be perfect if it was 18mm string spacing and a narrower nut.

All of this pickup talk got me thinking. I currently have a SJ 4 2x on the building queue.
Eventually, I could swap both FDVs for P-tones. That might give an interesting tonal combination Has anyone tried this?

Very similar to this one that also started life as a J.

It’s was modded before it came to me, and it was a factory route job, too. As I mentioned when I posted pics of my new SJ, this should be going up for sale soon. It’s hard to let go of, though!

Finally found the time to replace my volume pot in my ABZ5!

A bit nervous operating the soldering iron with my “granny” glasses on AND a magnification device perched on a box above the cavity compartment, but I got it got done.

The Noble Brand Bartolini 30% audio taper 250K push/pull pot sits taller than the stock Dingwall pot. There’s only an 1/8” gap between the bass and the bottom of the volume knob — I can live with that.

No more scratchy! Smoooooooth volume controls!

Thanks again to the TB’er who recommended the Noble/Bartolini pot (drawing a blank at the moment).

My older SJ 4 has the factory P route; I wish I had a pickguard and a P pickup so I could give it a try.

I'm using it, but not very often - it's a little disconcerting to play, because all the sustain gets... muted. But, I don't think it sounds as different as it feels to play, and it really is good for certain songs (Motown stuff, for me). I jam it pretty much all the way on there - it can get good sounds barely attached too, but yeah, it feels like it's about to pop off and it's hard to get the strings evenly muted unless you push it down. I pluck pretty hard, you could also try it with a pick to get a lot of attack before the die-off.
