Just FYI I would say that's not normal for a combustion either, I think you said it had low output as well. I'd get both of these basses looked at cos neither of your basses match my experice.

Every Combustion I've had there was no difference in output switching form active to passive and if I had the EQ set flat I would never know which mode I was in until I started turning knobs.

I had a Glock in my Super J and if anything it was too bassy.

Remember I changed the preamp out for a John East. Definitely a big difference going from Passive to Active with that preamp. I’ve worked on the setup today and tweaked some things so I’ll see how my gig goes this afternoon.

Hi Guys - As of Saturday, I'm in the Club. I am fortunate to have picked it up from the original owner, who let it go for what I could afford... not what it was worth. He had D'Addarios on it, but it also came with a fresh set of Dingwall strings. Having a hard time putting it down and concentrating on work!

(don't stress - there is 1-2mm of clearance between the strap button and the top of the retaining wall)

One thing I’m learning is there aren’t a lot of similarities between the import and domestic Dingwalls other than fan frets. Different fingerboard radius, different pickup placement, different neck girth and width, different sized headstocks. I was sold on my Combustion and I guess I thought the Canadian would just stop at being “nicer”. Having to realize the major difference in output that SF2 pickups put out vs the Combustion stock pickups. The more I spend time with both of them tho, the more I like them both for their differences while still loving their similarities. Still would love to know your Canadian Pickup heights if anyone cares to post them.

Well, isn’t this ironic. I called Jason a few days ago about some pups for my D-Roc/birds, and some C strings for the string sets that were in the Mystery Box I got from FN. While we were chatting, I asked if he had any news on the above NG3. Turns out, it’s in and at inspection in Canada. So very shortly after I get my Z3, I’ll also get a bowel-destroying NG3. :roflmao:

So regular D'Addarios will fit and work length and tension-wise on the multiscale neck? Will DRs work? Ideally I would like something like Hi Beams or Nickel Low Riders.

I have an overall association with tapered strings. The overtones in the notes sound - sour is the wrong word - but not sweet. Not quite in tune is how I hear them. And I feel the note attacks don't hit as hard, maybe the punch is more in the high mids rather than in the low mids where I like it.

Anyway, this is how I have experienced the differences on 34" scale basses. So I want to try non-tapered strings on the Dingwall to see if I can get more of the character I am looking for.

Are those strings in the picture the D'Addarios? They are untapered, so I'm interested. What kind were they, and how did they sound and feel?

I think Daddarios makes a set for MS. not standard Daddarios

I can’t recall if Payson has a taper on the black daggers.

Thanks! I meant that they aren't tapered at the bridge, did you notice a big difference between these and the Dingwall strings?

Not sure on the imports but on the Canadian models some of the adjustor screws did not go low enough for some when they had non-tapered strings installed. I would ask Jason at frenation for a recommendation on non tapered string sets, he will have a bunch of options that will fit plus you're close by.
