Dingwall Owners Club

I’m just now starting to order pickups for those birds, going to throw some super fatties in one. No birds will be rousted out of the roost in the arrival of Skeletor to my Dingwall family.

Ive used both TI flats and Payson flats on my AB2 and NG's. I prefer the Payson flats by a LONG mile. For me the TI's were just flop city and had zero sustain - perfect if that's the sound you're shooting for however. The Payson flats remind me a lot of the "reformulated" Sadowsky Blue label flats before Warwick started producing them.

The newest Fanned Flats set model has the best B string to date. You can really dig in and it has excellent sustain. It also mixes with the rest of the set very well. Truly designed to go together as a Fanned Flats set.

Got a clip from last night! I installed a new Nordy 2B preamp last week, it sounds FANTASTIC with the Super Fatty 2's. Turns out the one I was using was most likely faulty from the outset. I guess they had a bad batch at some point and a few got out.. It wasn't super noticeable for months, it just got worse in the last couple weeks. Speaking of Payson, lol.. I'm rocking the fanned flats in this clip. Grab your headphones!

And NO, before you ask we did not coordinate our posts :roflmao: :roflmao:

Question for anyone with a Glockenklang 3 band on a Canadian Z or Sklar model, specifically earlier 2012 era Glock preamps. Do you find that you have to turn your bass knob up almost all the way to get any good bass response? I know Sheldon says they should perform great flat, but I just picked up that Eucalyptus top Z2 and it’s my first Canadian and my first bass with a Glock and I’m shocked that I have to turn the bass up that much. My Combustion has a John East but before it had the EMG and both of those I rarely need to crack the low end at all.

I don’t think so. Assuming your amp settings are in the realm of normalcy and there aren’t any other funky factors I’d say that sounds unusual.

are the pick up heights appropriate?

are you looking for crazy fat bass response?

I had the Glock pre, 2 band, and it did not take much knob twisting to get huge results. Sounds like you have a problem.

On the other hand, I have always liked the passive modes. The Glockenlang would get turned on, I'd add a bit of bass boost, then turn it off. There it was if I needed it, but I rarely did. The passive tone rolloff was more my speed.

I’m thinking the pickups need to be raised. I have a Combustion 5 that I have put Super Fatty 2s in and I put a John East preamp in it, and flat on that bass is huge and perfect. The Glock on this Canadian bass with the same pickups seems anemic, but pickup height may need to be raised higher than the Combustion. I’m guess this Glock preamp is designed to be the same level output as passive mode normally does. That’s not the case on my Combustion, there’s a noticeable volume bump that happens when you engage active mode on that bass.

Correct. When engaging the glovkenklang there is hardly any noticeable difference from passive when set flat.
Also, the production pick ups in the combustions are a hotter output pick up than the Canadian pick ups. So there is that.
To balance out your levels you may want to lower the combustion pick ups and then gain up on your amp.

congrats BTW on that beautiful bass! It is a rare stunner for sure.

another thought is what strings you are using bass to bass

My Combustion 5 has Canadian Super Fatty 2 pickups in it. I’m using Payson Red Label Nickels.
I see. These pick ups are designed with a larger bottom end than the FD3s inherently.

the Paysons are fantastic strings.

I can’t help you with height as I set my with headphones on to suite my playing finger playing style and have them lower then factory spec. You don’t want to go higher then factory spec though or you’ll lose clarity and articulation IMO.

I’m of the opinion that there has to be an issue with the preamp itself. I’ll hopefully have a Z with a Glock this summer - that said, I’ve played a Sadowsky with the same bass frequency boost as the Glock (40 Hz) for decades. I set my pickup heights lower than suggested settings, and it’s very apparent when the bass boost is engaged and turned up. Obviously, the tell is in the lower strings. Even more so on the live stage at stage volumes.

It’s mentioned that the Glock is designed to have little gain/volume difference between bypass and active, but you’d expect an audible difference in a bass boost at 14-18 db.

This might be an apples to oranges thing, but I don’t think so - just tossing it out there as something to consider.

I too have a Sadowsky PJ5 that I use a lot, (pro player here in Nashville for 30 years). To be fair I may have gotten myself a little spoiled with the Combustion 5 having a John East preamp that has a noticeable bump even set flat. It too is a very transparent preamp like the Glock but gets the Combustion up to an equal output volume similar to the Sadowsky. Currently I should say that when I turn low end eq up on the Glock, it works but even tho it’s centered at 40hz like the Sadowsky, when you turn up the Glock you only get those Uber low Frequencies whereas the Sadowsky is broadband and is boosting other frequencies as well that can be “heard” such as 80-100hz. The Glock doesn’t seem to be boosting those frequencies but rather just pushing up the ultra low 40 hz stuff. So by the time I turn the knob all the way up I just have a lot of 40hz to get the output to the level it matches my Sadowsky but there’s not really any more 80-100hz. My John East preamp on my Combustion is a prototype made for Brian Barrett here of Low End Basses and allows you to set each frequency of eq, so on that bass
I probably have my lows set around 75-90 hz, mids around 750 hz and highs are probably around 5 kHz. It’s perfect for the Combustion and the Super Fatty 2 pickups so I guess I’m either gonna have to find a sweet spot for the Glock preamp and the Super Fattys or I’m gonna have to do a preamp swap to see if it gets me where I want to be. I would still love it if someone can send me some measurements of where your pickup heights are set for your Canadian Z models…..

Is your pre ran in 9 or 18v?

I’m not ruling out any issues with it. I’m just trying to help make sure you haven’t overlooked something simple that may have been forgotten.

I’ll try and get you some measurements later today.

curious.
How is your passive tone on the Z in comparison to passive on the combustion?

So the bass came to me with no passive option. I’m told this was an earlier Glockenklang preamp that Dingwall doesn’t use anymore. It was a 9 volt, but I added an extra battery and made it 18 volts, and that gave me zero boost, and I couldn’t tell any difference in output. The previous owner mentioned having a volume pot issue and they couldn’t find a replacement board, so they had to wire a different pot to the circuit board. Might be the wrong value.

Understood - We’re cut from the same cloth guys . You may be correct in that it’s a bandwidth thing or the Q of the boosts. We’re probably just used to hearing certain things from a preamp, but the Glock frequency boosts are just weird. And the Darkglass frequency boost are even weirder.

I like how Sklar sounds with his bass live, and I’ve seen him onstage with his Dingwalls many times. His Glock is set to 250 on the mids - stock is 550. He mentions that he uses the boosts a little bit. I’m hoping I’ll be cool with the Glock on my incoming Z, but we’ll see. I’ll be interested what happens with your pickup adjustments as other players list what they are doing on their Z models.

The flat output of the Z is equal to the passive output of the Combustion, which to me is very low, much lower than say a typical Fender P Bass output. When you engage the East preamp on the Combustion, even in flat eq position, it likely boosts the overall output 10-15 db. The Glock appears to just take the passive tone and output and add the eq on top of it, but it just seems to be such a low output to begin with.
