I hate to say it but it looks like I’m stepping away from the Dingwall again for a bit. I’ve got 2023 plans that will involve selling my Canadian BEA-D Bird (keep an eye on the classifieds if you’re into such things) to finance something completely different.

I’m gonna miss the versatility and silence of the pickups, so I’m already considering an NG3 in the future. The bridge spacing at 18mm is more my speed. I need to check the spacing at the nut to verify it’ll be a good fit for me. If anyone has played both a D Bird and an NG3 and has thoughts on how they compare, then I’d love to hear them

I would like to actually visit Leipzig sometime soon. I had a couple hour layover there on my way to Iraq. Only got to see the inside of the airport!

In the meantime I did get a NG3 upgrade kit from Bass Central. Those guys are really awesome as well and will always do their best to take care of you!

Now i just need to get the 6way and Ill be all set (for now).

Hey! Me, too! I ordered the NG-3 upgrade and the 6-way switch about a week after I bought my NG-2. Funny thing is the upgrade kit and switch have been here for 3 days and I'm STILL waiting for my NG-2 to show up! D4*$ customs people! I just got an update on the USPS website that it's now here in Atlanta! Maybe, just maybe it will be here tomorrow.

Next will be to figure out that 6-way switch. Not much in the way of documentation. Good thing I'm good with electronics. I'm sure I'll figure it out. I want to preserve the NG-2 settings while also ADDING the additional NG-3 settings. Is that what you are doing?

What are you looking at getting?

I’m not saying just yet but it’s gonna be pretty nice. I’ve got a deposit down so it’s time for me to move a few things.

I’ve been playing my Nordy Acinonyx a lot, so I’m moving to something with a similar string spacing at the nut, which is considerably narrower than the D Bird. In fact, it’s a 5 with a nut that is almost the same as the D Bird. With my hand issues, that’s a big help.

I've had mine for about 8 months or so but a good part of that has been traveling and I wanted enough time with it to get a good feel for the settings before making any changes.

In the end i went with a sort of NG3/DROC mix. Im basically dropping the Bridge solo for middle solo so my 6 way will be:

1. Bridge Middle Series
2. Bridge Middle Parallel
3. Middle Solo
4. Neck Bridge Parallel
5. Neck Solo
6. Bridge & Middle in Parallel/Series Neck

I find the NG's (4 or 5 string) and the Combustion 5 to be generally easier playing than the DBird. The DBird nut feels very wide to me, like going from a Jazz to a P but larger.

Here's what I'm getting on my DBird, NG3 4 and NG3 5. I didn't realize the 5 string was 16.5 mm, normally I can tell on parallel fret basses but didn't even notice on this one.

Here's I got for nut widths, probably not measuring it right but there's a little difference. It feels like a bigger difference in my hands!

Your 5 must've been adjusted narrower, because they're usually 18mm. The third allen screw (towards the back of the saddle) lets you adjust the spacing of the barrel saddle. Maybe it's an optical illusion, but it kind of looks like your B to E spacing is tighter than the E to A.

Yeah, I distinctly remember measuring my NG3 6 at 18mm.

Question regarding the truss rod:

I‘m trying to put a little relief into my D-Roc Custom’s neck (with a set / tuning of pretty light strings, that is). I‘ve taken - in small increments over the past months - almost a full turn (ccw) by now and I’m still a little lower than the recommended .38 mm Dunlop pick.

However, I’m starting to get the feeling I might be turning loose the adjustment screw of the truss rod - I was under the impression this should be impossible as Dingwall uses solely dual-action truss rods.

Any pointers / knowledge / experience from the gang?

My understand also is it should be a dual acting truss rod. In the middle it can be a bit “soft” perhaps. As long as you aren’t experiencing major resistance against it I’d keep doing what you’re doing.

Side note: the older (V1-5?. Up to about 2019(the 10 yr anniversary IIRC) combustions did use a single acting truss rod and it was possible to unscrew the nut.
