Dingwall Owners Club

All sub-kick and snare with some of the guitars weedly-weedlies coming through on top.

This is how 90% of bigger shows I've attended have sounded, one of the reasons for no longer going (ticketmaster gouging being the other major one).
There is a mid sized venue in town here that has a great sound system but for some reason if there are two guitars they have them panned hard left or right (depending on which side of the stage they are on). The only way to get a good mix is to stand in a few specific spots in the room. It boggles my mind every time I go there which is as seldom as possible now because of this setup.
I should add for clarity I'm in no way agreeing with the guitar player mentioned in your post above, he clearly has no frame of reference from the stage and it's silly of him to comment IMO

The guitarist for Intervals got mad when I posted on social media how god awful the sound was for their set when they opened for Chon and BTBAM a couple years ago. It was seriously the worst mix I’ve ever heard. All sub-kick and snare with some of the guitars weedly-weedlies coming through on top. Couldn’t hear the thunderous shredding of Jacob Umansky ant all.

Aaron (guitarist, Intervals) basically called me an idiot, that it was my fault for standing where I stood (he incorrectly said, based on my pic, that I was in the pit which I was not). He did defend the bands sound guy, which is nice and all, but it seriously sounded like he forgot to take several mics/signals off mute for the set. Chon and BTBAM sounded phenomenal, though.

Everything was way too loud, however.
LOL@standing in the wrong spot. Pretty douchy to pick a fight with a fan bc your sound sucks. Before I got to your post I was thinking I saw Intervals open for Animals as Leaders last year and they both sounded awesome. You probably helped them get their act together!

I understand his perspective, I was talking trash about a member of the band essentially. But it was a legit complaint.

Part of the problem is that the sound in a lot of these old LA theater venues is just garbage. These spaces weren't built and designed for the jet-engine loud shows.

So, it was finally time for me to graduate from being a single ding-dad to a Double Ding-Daddy! Or a Ding Ding Dong as the Swedish say.

This beautiful bass came in today while I was at work and I had to suffer through the day knowing it was just waiting for me. Immaculate quality as always, I'm in love. The fretboard is a dark piece of Pau Ferro with just the hint of red, the fret slots are machined on a CNC without them ever breaking the edge of the fretboard, I could just go on and on but you know what I'm talking about. There are a few shapes that still look a bit odd to me since I'm more used to the D-Roc 4, mainly the headstock, but that's fine. It's hard to compare the quality between this Korean made model and the made in China model, since there's just absolutely nothing to pick on. Makes reviewing this a lot harder.

I wonder if this is why on their latest tour they reconfigured their stage sound specifically for those standing in the pit. That’s why they all use stereo on-stage cabs. It’s less for the band and more for those standing front of the stage, so he says. He took your feedback and fixed it (presumably)! :)

I think his comment at me said that, essentially, there wasn't good front fill at that venue. But I was much farther back than the pit (because I didn't want to die in the pit because I'm old now). I hope they've upped their live sound, they're too talented to be held back by a crappy mix.

Barrymores?

I noticed @Jamie_Funk has them on his combustion here

Just noticing this mention now....

I replaced the older style bridge units on my V4 Combustion with the Babicz rails - easier to adjust, better adjustment range (had issues where I ran out of height adjustment), lock everything down and it is super solid. Noticed a slight (to me) sound improvement as well - a bit more even sounding between the B and E string, and SLIGHTLY brighter. tone overall (slight but still noticeable - used the exact same set of strings when I switched over)

As always, YMMV.

That being said, on my newly acquired NG3 with the Hipshot rails, I feel no need to replace with Babicz - the Hipshot don't appear to have the dreaded "self-lowering" I've heard some have experienced, and they adjust super easily. The Babicz are EXPENSIVE (especially here in Canada) and while I'm glad I scratched an itch I had to try them (they are staying on the Combustion), I don't feel the need to do so again.

My 2 cents.

J

Barrymores is long gone, they hadn't done actual band shows for years and the building was (and still is) falling down. I'm talking about the Bronson Centre.

It's been a while!

I've only been to the Bronson Centre once and it was an acoustic thing, so not so bad.

Now, come to think of it I think I've only been to Barrymores once and it was probably in the early 2000's (Big Wreck).

I hear you man. There’s a converted amphitheater here in CT called the Webster. Lots of acts come through there. Last show I saw was Death Angel, Exodus and Testament.

The mix sucked. Then testament came on and boom. Sounded quite different.
The best sound I heard from that venue was seeing Static X. The engineer knew what he was doing that night

Saw Dream Theater at the Wiltern while on their Astonishing tour years ago. I had an easier time understanding what was going on because I knew the material QUITE well. My wife on the other hand, said she thought they probably played really good, but couldn’t understand a single word or guitar riff. We listened to the album a few days later and said “yeah I barely heard any of that” lol.

Funny you mention it, that's the venue from my anecdote.

So, for anyone like me who has been shy about adjusting your own bass. I did some work on my Combustion last nigh ahead of a gig this weekend. I followed the setup series videos on Dingwall's YouTube channel. They were easy to follow and my bass feels amazing, especially with new strings and a good cleaning to go with the setup.
I had been taking it to a local shop but they would never set the action low enough for me. For reference I had to give the saddles 1.5 turns to lower them to what Sheldon describes as a high action setup in the video!
Anyways, plays great at the moment and I feel very confident in my ability to maintain that.

Thanks @Sheldon D. for such comprehensive, easy to follow instructions!
