Could someone with one of these basses measure it quickly for me? If you could snap a photo of the measurement that would be even better!

I know it’s not exactly what you’re looking for but it gives an idea and a base for a bit of estimation.

Note the J does have a smaller nut width

It depends on how you want to measure it. Shown here is my Super J 4-string. Measuring center if string to center of string parallel to the nut is about 7/16” and is consistent between all strings. Measuring perpendicular to the strings, center to center, the result is closer to 3/8”, and is also consistent from string to string.

Hey guys I posted last week about the issue with my pickup screw. Well I watched some videos. I saw where the hole was heated and cleaned out then epoxy was used. So copied it and BOOM done . I treated it very carefully and took it very slow. I let it sit for a couple of days only cleaning the area. Well I’m happy to say everything is good to go. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who made suggestions. You guys are just freaking awesome!!! Dingwall for life!!

Finally getting around to posting the KK3! Have not gigged or rehearsed with it yet. Initial opinion is that it is a much different animal than the Combustion or the NG. Some slight similarities in pickup settings in passive mode, but the Nordstrand pre gives the FD3N's a really great sound in active mode. The Wenge board adds in a sweet roundness to the tone that the maple board NG's don't have. The ability to swing the middle pup in and out changes things quite a bit too. That said.. here's some pics and a recording of the different pickup settings.

Breakdown of the recording - All fingerstyle, Nordstrand pre set flat, plucked just over the middle pickup (like a p-bass position roughly). Presented very similar to the pickup recordings on the Dingwall site just to keep it familiar for everyone. I didn't slap or use a pick, this was more for you all to get an idea of what the different preamp settings *basically* sound like at all positions with the middle in and out.

Pup heights are 4/32" treb, 6/32" bass (balanced with VU meter plugin). Recording is straight through, but these are the different selections listed in order played. Curious to hear your opinions!

1) Neck Solo
2) Neck + Middle
3) Neck/Bridge Series
4) Neck/Bridge Series + Middle
5) Neck/Bridge Parallel
6) Neck/Bridge Parallel + middle
7) Bridge Solo

I think you already got the exact measurements you need, but this is a good excuse to post a pic. I have a 4-stringer in each neck and subjectively that little bit of nut width feels very different, even with identical bridge spacing! The P feels hefty and the J feels pencil-thin.

I don't know why I can't just be normal, but somehow I ended up with a Super P with a custom J neck, and a Super J with a custom P neck. But no, I'm not gonna try switching them!

So yeah - ignore the engraved swoops - the white one is actually the J neck, and the wenge one is the P neck.

• I got a D-Roc 5 in an in-person trade. Loved it. But I prefer short/medium scale basses.
• Bought a Super J 5 off Reverb, to try the shorter scale.
• Sold the D-Roc and another bass.
• Played a gig with the Super J - Amazing tone to go with the playability! Maybe my favorite sound ever?
• Ordered a Super P4 today with the proceeds from my sales. I like fairly traditional basses, and the passive P will complement my Super J with Glockenklang.

Specs on my order:

Super P - 4 String, Alder body
Solid color: Black
Black-White-Black pickguard
Additional Tortoise pickguard (not on the bass - so I can switch the look occasionally)
Maple Fretboard
Black Blocks on the fretboard
Hipshot Extender Key

Pretty simple, but killer. A look I have loved in the past, but I don't currently have a "Geddy P" bass. And who doesn't like black 'n maple?

I decided to go with John Fox based on a recommendation from the seller of my Super J5. Good move - he had an open slot (his last one) in the queue for a Super P build - with a maple fretboard and blocks planned, no less! They all sound great! I'm about to do this to mine with a minor twist. I'm putting B50K pot/DPDT switches in place of the T/M/B controls so I can switch each pup from series to parallel, then I'm going to wire my 6-way switch the following:
1) neck
2) neck + middle
3) middle
4) middle + bridge
5) bridge
6) EVERYTHING!

I had ordered a Nordstrand 3b for my fretless, but I decided to go with an Audere for that, so I'm going to put this Nordstrand in the NG.

Thanks for the demo! I'm excited to get this one finished now. That is the tone I was hoping for.

I have a SJ4 with SF1 pickups, Glock 2 band. I think it’s circa 2011 or so:

I was going to get a SPJ4 in that matte Pearl Purple that some of the original D-Birds came in. Alas, life happens and I know I have more gear than I need as is. My intention was to hotrod this SJ4 the whole time. So, I have an ACG/East EQ-01 preamp that is going into bass. I have had one of these in a Warwick and it’s awesome. I love filter-based preamps; I have had an Alembic Series 1 and a Wal mk2 before. Expect some further tweaks to the electronics as well.
This bass is routed for a P pickup and I wanted a PJ (never had one). I remembered someone recently mentioning that they have one on hand and didn’t really have plans for it. Thank you again @spiritbass for the pickup an pg trace! For years, I have been reading about how much you love your SJP4 & I can’t wait to join you in that experience.

So, here is where I wouldn’t mind some opinions. I was considering painting this bass purple. Currently my thinking is that I would almost have to go with a white MOP pg. I don’t know if I love that look because on the PJ4 was envisioning it had wenge/wenge + wenge pg.
So, I am open to hearing ideas. Maybe another color would look great with the white MOP inlays and pg. Maybe purple, a different pg (tort again maybe) would look fine w/white MOP inlays and maple/maple.

I am not dead set on painting it. The white has aged nicely into a creamy yellow-ish color under some lighting. The finish has a bit of mojo so I have thought hmm…maybe an “aged” white MOP pg or regular ewhite MOP pg would look really nice on this bass.
What do y’all think?

One piece of advice, do not sell or lose the neck J Pickup and pickguard. They are no longer being produced and are impossible to replace.

On painting, go for it just choose a good shop. I would probably pick a lighter classic fender colour like burgundy mist or maybe Inca silver to go with the maple neck. When I asked about painting my super a couple of years back Sheldon's advice was don't try to strip the poly. Specifically he said the poly coat on the super makes an excellent base to paint.

Morning. I have a DROC and I do love it. I probably only really dig the middle pickup though, to be honest. It's one of the best P bass sounds I've heard. Not that the other options are bad , I just don't seem to have a use for them.

I'm considering selling the DROC and buying an NG3. Obviously the NG3 is active, or can be. So I figure I could do more with the NG3 and maybe I'd get more tonal variety out of it. But I don't want to just thrash around and waste $$. Does anyone have any thoughts on comparisons / positives , negatives. I hope to retain , if not improve upon my favorite pickup option I mentioned above.

As someone who bought a D-Roc, fell in love with the tone and then bought an NG3 I'd say that selling the D-Roc for an NG would be the worst mistake. These basses don't really sound like each other, even with same pickup settings. I opted to get a custom pickup toggle with the outer pickups in a jazz bass configuration and my favourite, the middle pickup soloed. The jazz configuration on the D-Roc sounds absolutely killer.

sounds fun! With a neck like that I think you could almost do anything you want with the body and not worry too much about matching those blocks. From a distance the blocks Dont pop off the neck it seems. I think you could go dark body and dark PG and it still look awesome.

or keep the aged white body and put a rusted metal looking PG on it. Rat rod?

Can someone confirm that the FD3N pickups on the NG3 are NOT coil-splitable? (Single-coil) I think you can only run them series/parallel since the internal magnets/coils are staggered beneath the lower and upper strings. Right?

Yes, all current Dingwall pickups are split coil (like a P pickup)

I also have both and couldn't agree more. I'd like to know how you wired the D-Roc to get the jazz config.

Toss it down the stairs a few times and drag it up and down the street for a while and you'll have your own 'relic' bass lol
