Even when they're not top load designs, that's how I use them. That is also why I do not like a Velco strap around neck support. And, Velcro will eventually wear out and then the "strap" will just be a loose flap in the case. Not good when there is a zipper on it and not good in general. The Mono Vertigo is a good design for this, albeit a little heavy and not a great pocket.
This is why I love the Protec Contego. I don't know if it's an a top load design, but all you have to do is zip it open a little bit and slide the bass in and out.
I like the Dingwall bags and will use them for rehearsals etc but this thing has made it really hard not to want my Dingwall’s protected by it in public.
Has anyone installed a Payson bridge? Is it considered an upgrade to the monorails on the D-Roc?
Thread lock in the Dingwall saddles is officially my pet hate, in the past because of that sh*t in those bridges I have stripped 2 not 1 of those screw because of the f***ing thread lock and I have strongly complained to the factory begging them not to put that sh*t in the threads THERE is no need the downward pressure of the strings will never allow those screw to come loose and let's not forget time, grime, sweat and dust can be considered the best non chemical thread lock ever. I still do this day do not understand why they put that sh*t in the saddles screws.
Morning all. Does anyone know if there are any alternatives to the string retainer that is used on the 4 and 5-string combustions and NGs? I've seen photos of 3D-printed designs from a couple of years ago, but I can't seem to find any newer info to see if those are available somewhere. I apologize if my question is much like beating a dead horse, but that retainer is the only thing that is holding me from purchasing a Combustion, I'm just not a fan of how they look. I much prefer the method that is being used on the 6-string basses.
Looks like a Sandberg retainer might fit, but I'm not 100%.

You mean the string tree?
If so I'm sure you can get creative and look up string trees until you find one that you fancy. They're not complicated.
And you should probably just suffer through it and buy a dingwall, give it a shot maybe it'll grow on you.

Hell, I seriously didn't know what it was called. I had to look it up and was just making sure that's what you were talking about. Maybe you could use two of the little circle ones side by side? I've seen people with little skulls and other designs in them. Or the kind I've seen on guitars where it lays flat with the edges curled up to allow the string in.
I really like the one on my form factor audio wombat.
I think sandberg uses a similar style as well
I haven’t lost any sleep over it, but the first thing I noticed when I got my D-Bird was the complete lack of break angle at the the nut. It’s nearly a horizontal run from the tuner peg to the fretboard. The multi scale slanted string tree looks like a good solution or you could install a string bar like what Lakeland uses and just angle it at whatever looks right on your bass.
I prefer the look of the retainer on the Wombat as well. It's just cleaner. I was looking at the Sandberg design, I think those might work.
Do you feel like it needs any? I agree it's so flat but both the Dbird custom and the Droc standard (with Hipshot saddles and tuners) sing and sustain beautifully and never fall out of tune.
I agree with this. My Combustion never goes out of tune. Sustain also not an issue.
oh man... just approved the inlay color for my Speedos. Still in disbelief that this is real, lol..
So far I've had 3 Dingwalls, all came in different bags. The first one I bought was a D-Roc Standard 4 in 2022 which came to me by accident in a case meant for an NG3, the case seems to be the Music Area Wind 20. I've also bought an older second hand NG3 which came in the same bag, but with back straps that were about 10cm shorter making it impossible to carry for a big guy like me.. My D-Roc Standard 5 came in a grey bag with much smaller and rounder front compartment that I can't find on the Music Area website, but that one has so little space in the front compartment I don't really use it.
I'd wager that all Dingwall instruments fit comfortably to almost any standard bass gig bag that isn't super tight on regular basses, even the offset models. Though the offset models will have a bit of space at the bottom, but that's easily fixed with a semi decent support.
