Dingwall Owners Club

Eeeyyyy you got it back, congrats! I was eyeing that off boi, thinking about calling Bass Centre after you linked it a while ago.
Are those dots real inlays? It had those sticker blocks that you’ve obviously removed. Hope it does better for you this time round

Yep, dots are real inlays. Probably done with the frets. I don’t know what he was thinking with the block sticker things…

I think people just don't have the money right now, honestly. Bad time to sell with everything getting more expensive and every average person having less disposable income as a result.

This. The market is super slow in general. I don't think I remember it being so slow here at TalkBass. Excellent basses at reasonable prices are sitting here for months.

That looks very good. I hope you're happy.
How is it? You've had one of these before, right? Does it feel different now to play the same instrument again?

It's the same bass I ordered as a fretless but didn't gel with it for some reason, so I reluctantly sold it. The next owner fretted it, and then put it up for sale, and I'm extremely happy about that!

Hey everyone, I‘m currently trying to sell my Super PJ (see my ad). To be honest, I’m not receiving as many PMs as I expected for this lovely bass - can I get some honest feedback from the group as to what might put people off? Is it missing seller’s feedback? Sticker shock? Everyone’s bass funds being depleted from summer vacation? Reluctance towards an international deal?

I think it's a beautiful bass, if it was for sale in the States, I would definitely be interested in purchasing it.

Agreed with everyone else and @Katoosie gives good advice. I don't bother looking at the international classifieds so first I'm seeing this but basically asking $4K paypal f&f from Germany with no feedback? Hard pass. And there's only 4 strings? Double hard pass. $4K puts you in a range of some other mighty fine for sale/recently sold Dingwalls (or other basses or anything for that matter) so you have to be prepared to wait for the right buyer to come along.
Even if I was in love with the bass, even if you're a stand-up guy, way too much risk for my liking. I'm reluctant to even buy from reputable dealers internationally.
Maybe John Fox will go to Germany next and can scoop it up for somebody otherwise I'd focus on a local deal if I were you and maybe adjust your expectations if you're looking for a quick sale or be prepared to play the waiting game.

Well, that’s an honest reply. Yours is a different perspective for sure, so that’s helpful!

I thought my contributions to this forum and thread over the years might account for something, as might my willingness to do a video call. Well, I guess that depends on a potential buyer - but maybe I should try Reverb.com so a potential buyer might feel more protected.

I didn’t see an immediate need to bash four-strings altogether, even though that might be your personal opinion.

Aside from that: Thank you!

you do unfortunately have a lot working against you right now. I hadn’t seen it in the classifieds as I also don’t look at the overseas section very much at all. That said, due to another point already mentioned, things are a bit tighter right now so I’m “shopping” less.

Ive seen your contribution to this group which is a just a select few people and a vid call would also help ease any concerns for myself but I do think a lot of folk are a bit to “shy” to attempt international purchases.
I’ve both bought and sold internationally and met some cool people doing it never with a bad experience but to each their own.

the reality is, your probably waiting for a European buyer. Or perhaps try a trade or consignment to somewhere like bass direct.

Shipping and insuring to US isn’t going to be cheap and I think you’d have to eat a good portion of it to make a deal happen. Perhaps with that, you’d be better off making your price a bit more tempting locally to just avoid the whole international procedure… or be patient. IT WILL SELL!! You just need the right person to see it.
Good luck!

The economy is in the toilet and inflation is making everything ridiculously expensive. Combine that with the fact that nobody is making extra disposable income for sitting around at home and this was bound to happen.

Everyone went out and spent and bought from 2019-2022 like money was going out of style. It was a seller’s market and the cost of basses skyrocketed (I saw up scale basses almost double in value in that time) Now nobody has the money for high priced bass purchases with the cost of living being so darned high right now.

It’s become a total buyer’s market. I’ve seen basses on TB that I thought were a steal just sitting there $200-300 less than they sold for last year still sitting there for months. If you’re buying, it’s a great time for it. Unfortunately, nobody is buying.

Unfortunately for sellers, the market has recently started to shift to a buyers market. There’s a lot of inventory available and much of it isn’t moving very fast, especially in the over $2000 segment.

Your bass and ad look great, but if you’re not getting the traffic you want there’s only a couple of options - increase it’s visibility (list it in more places) and price it better than competitively. I don’t know what a used Dingwall like yours actually sells for (selling price not the asking price) but if you want to move it faster your best bet is to price it lower than any currently on the market. Even then you might have a bit of a wait since the potential buyer base for Dingwall 4 string P/J basses is pretty limited.

Good luck with the sale! If I hear of any active Dingwall buyers I’ll be sure to direct them to your ad.

No problem, and not to bash 4 strings...I've thought about grabbing a 4 string D-bird or D-roc but it's safe to say most people gravitate towards Dingwall for that 37" B string so it's another thing going against you.

You seem like a good guy although I'm just generally untrusting when it comes to large financial transactions but more than your trustworthiness, I think the biggest thing is that internationally it touches more hands and more can go wrong and even if it's a small percentage it's such a PITA if something does go wrong. Nobody wants to deal insurance claims for months. There's been enough bad stories that the risk/reward has to be really worth it for me.

Personally, I'd rather take a nice long drive into Canada than ship a bass from Europe. That said, I still check out www.bassdirect.co.uk semi regularly as they get cool used stuff so it may just be a matter of time but it'd have to be the one.

You just gotta have patience. One month isnt really that long. The AB1 that just sold (twice) was listed for like a year. Good luck to you sir!

I bought back my first Dingwall NG3 after seeing the Payson bridge for sale. Just got it installed and I’m a fan! I wanted the NG3 back to take to the not so nice gigs in Detroit and to have another bass setup in F with a .160

I think it's a combo of all those things.
  • Supers seem to be most popular among folks who try long-scale Dingwalls first and decide they want something a little more traditional.
  • Not having feedback doesn't bother me, but I can see how the cost of the bass and it being in Europe would lead some folks to hesitate.
  • Tons of folks probably are feeling the squeeze after paying for summer vacations (the sweet spot is in spring time when Americans are receiving their tax refunds [are for getting good deals when they owe taxes and gotta sell gear to cover the cost]).
  • International shipping has been very rocky for a lot of folks the past couple years. That said, I bought a bass from Harley Benton that shipped from the EU or UK and it arrived just fine as I think they used UPS (sorry, it's been 6+ months since I got the bass).
  • Asking for F&F payment when there are so many uncertainties in shipping and lack of feedback is also probably a red flag for some folks. I'd honestly up the price to cover the PayPal fee and just do a regular payment. That way, you and the buyer are protected.
  • Of course, the economy is likely a factor for many as well.
If you have feedback on other sites (Reverb, BassChat, eBay, etc.), throw a screenshot up there. Some Dingwalls, especially ABs, Zs, and Prima models move ultra fast, but I've noticed Supers tend to linger a bit before they find new homes. It's a beautiful bass, and I hope you manage to move it on at a fair price for yourself.

Bass and bridge look fantastic, but the price for the bridge made my eyes water. Totally understand that it's a niche product for a niche market and they're being custom made (looks like Hipshot to me), but wow, that's a lot of avocado toast.

That bridge looks fantastic!!! Did the base plate conceal all of the holes from the stock bridge and ground wire? Almost bought a used Combustion with a Payson bridge that didn't cover one of the mounting holes for the G string bridge. Passed on the bass because of it.

Thanks! Yes, the plate covers the ground wire and the holes; I used the existing drill holes, they lined up perfectly. There is a tiny (maybe 1mm) curved slot, visible by the G string where the ground wire comes up from the electronics cavity, in between the pickup and bridge. In my instance it’s black in that spot but it would be very hard to see on all NG3/Conbustions.

The stock bridge saddles have two screws, the Payson bridge comes with one screw per string. You’ll use the rear holes to maintain 37” but after looking at it, it’s clear that’s the way it was designed. It is securely fixed to the bass with six screws for the entire bridge.

Hm, I might have to do this too. I don’t really like the smoked chrome hardware (looks cheap to me), and I want a Hipshot Drop-A tuner and I want the hardware to match.

As an owner of two 4 string Super’s, (SP4 & SPJ4) I have some a couple things to add.

Keep in mind, this is just my personal opinion.

Asking for PayPal and F&F with no current feedback on an international sale is a no go for some folks. Ditch the F&F and eat the cost is the only way to go here.
Lower the price. Being a 4, its want factor is not as high as a fiver. Just a reality speaking here. Hence you need to wait for the “right” buyer which takes time.

Personally, I find Pau Ferro visually unappealing. For me, I’d be looking for a dark board (Wenge is my thing or dark Rosewood only, or Maple as a last resort only).

Blocks are a cost upgrade that I most often simply won’t pay for so it’s very far down my want list.

Times are tough right now as has been discussed.

My latest SP4 has a few upgrades (D-tuner and a pricey P/g) and it was 4K CAD new. Your asking price is over $1k CAD higher for a used bass. Being a P/J is desirable for a couple hundred $ markup but as I indicated above, I don’t want to pay for the swamp ash and blocks upgrades. They’re all unimportant cosmetics to me.

So, the bass is priced a bit high and duties and taxes on an international sale may make that even higher. You may be better off just selling it locally (Europe) to mitigate most of the hassles that come with international sales/shipping costs.

So, in short, drop the price a bit and put your efforts into a local(ish) sale. And be patient.
Just my 0.015 c.

They are awesome basses btw. I love both of mine.
