Question on the Kyle Konkiel signature model. I like the custom wiring set up on this model. It is essentially the Combustion 2 with the middle pickup wired to the switch as on/off and with the volume knob as push/pull passive/active.

How difficult would it be to incorporate this wiring design into a Combustion 5 or NG3? I know his signature also uses a Nordstrand 3B but I'm more focused on the switch for the middle pickup, the 2 pickup rotary switch, and the push/pull volume knob.

Peripherally related (no pun intended): Many thanks to the fine folks at Music Loft in Wilmington, NC for letting me try out some really unique and amazing Dingwalls during a recent beach vacation (after removing all belts, rings and keys, verbally offering my firstborn as collateral, and letting my rock star friends charm them a bit). Very unassuming from the outside, truly one of the best music stores we've ever been into. I was lucky to get out of there for under $10 instead of $10,000. Now to plan the next trip somewhere near John Fox's house, LOL.

I have done similar with my NG3. I'm using an NG2 pickup selector for the middle and bridge (normal NG2 layout), and using a 3 position switch to select between Neck only, NG2 selector only, or middle position for both in parallel. It is not difficult to get setup with some basic soldering skills. I've switched to a Glockenklang, partly to get the active/passive push/pull volume pot to free up the switch.

I own the KK3, the middle pickup engagement is not the same as having it with the 3X rotary. I found it kinda useless to be honest. With the N+B in series (using the 2x switch), adding the middle just brought the volume down and muddied it all up. The other positions just sound thin to begin with and adding the middle makes the thin a little "thicker" - but it really didn't speak to me at all.. I actually gutted my KK3 for the the 3X/FD3/DGTC option. The bass sounds "alive" now. I play everything from reggae to metal and it never really tonally "fit" anywhere until I swapped the guts. This is just IMO, IME, YMMV, grain of salt, etc..

If you really want the P/P on the volume knob, that's easy for a tech to do, you can leave the switch as a dummy or even turn that hole into a passive tone knob.

Did you play that Olivine Green ABZ they had? I was literally a click away from buying that beauty, and if it had Speedo's I would not have hesitated. But I knew the window to buy it was closing fast and I could have easily paid for it by selling my two older ABZ's, but in the end I just couldn't part with them. Even though they don't have some features I want (wenge, 3 pickup, speedos) I love them both and just couldn't stand to see them go!

I heard even Kyle switched to a 6 way switch instead of the middle on/off.

Held that one, didn't play it through an amp! It is a beauty. I don't normally like green but HOT DAMN that green was cool (I had the same reaction to Candy Tangerine when it came out). The Olivene has some sort of gold-ish undertone that really makes it come alive. I spent most of my time with the explosion burst with ghost blocks.

It was still there as of a couple weeks back! But yeah, giving up two old ABZs for one new ABZ is tough to swallow...

I just put down my deposit for a John Taylor 5-string (in black) with John Fox. Thanks to everyone who recommended him, I was going to @ a few people until I realized it was quite a few people! So thanks for your enthusiastic endorsements.

Apparently I got his last black 5'er so it was good timing. Hopefully I can actually go pick up the bass when it arrives and see what other cool things he has.

I didn't think to ask at the time but while I would assume the production run won't come with an alternate pickguard, does anyone know if that's something that can be added or gotten later? When I ordered my SJ5 I got an additional guard at the time but since this is a new release I wonder if they have enough to offer something like that.

Talk to me about the Tone Fusion control on the Super P. The typical tone roll-off side is easily understood, but how about the mid cut side? Does it get into Jazz with both pickups on territory, or is it a different vibe entirely? I’ve only found one video showing the differences and there’s as much room sound as actual bass tone in the video, so for me it’s not very helpful. Any Super P owners care to record a DI track of the Tone Fusion centered, fully counterclockwise and fully clockwise?

Do you mean this video?

If not, you can clearly hear the difference of the tone-fusion around the 4 minute mark. The video is in German, though.

I put a NBD post up today and someone commented that they had seen your question and said I should post a link here in regards to the tone fusion control. my post is here NBD - Dingwall Super P5

Here is a quick test of the different positions on the tone fusion on my Super P5, you'll find which part is what on my original post.

Hope it helps, might upload some other samples later.

Fantastic! I'll check out your NBD thread and will listen to the samples. Much appreciated.

Fellow Dingwallers, I have a question. Dingwalls seem to be in short supply here so I can't get my hands on one to try it out. I'm quite curious about the ergonomics; are the 37-34 5 string versions' necks noticeably longer than, say, a regular J bass neck? Is it much harder to play in that sense? How's the neck profile, would you compare it to a J, P, Stingray, whatever. Thanks!

I am not expert on neck profile and there are differences among the necks of some models that are that same scale. I absolutely love the neck on my 5 string Z though!
In regards to reach, I have had 34” basses with longer reaches to the first fret (Alembic Series 1 was the longest reach). These basses play fantastically well. It takes most people just a few minutes to start to feel comfortable unless they are trying to play crazy chords high on the neck (but people get used to it and can adjust accordingly for that type of playing).
