My Z is 10lbs even with a regular 6 string set on it. It's half a pound heavier with a F# set. Haha

Having said that, I've owned a 6 string ABI with a wenge neck that was 9lbs. I've also owned a 5 string ABI with a maple neck that was 7.5. I might buy that again if it comes back up on the market. Haha.

I think Zs in general tend to be heavier and ABZs tend to be the lightest basses they make.

I'm not sure how much the bridge contributes to the Z weight with the hardware going through the body.

Generally speaking Zs are heavier but that body and neck wood make up the main concentration of the weight.
I’ve played a fully loaded Z3 6 with a lighter weight ash body and a maple neck that was barely over 8 lbs (Jared smiths bass). I was shocked how light it was compared to mine.
Of course we are also talking about 6 string basses too so the added mass of the wider neck, heavier pick ups and more hardware comes to play.

both of my newer Zs are 10lb basses for sure. My old maple and alder voodoo is a heavy 8 IIRC and my previous Ash/ Maple was a nice 8 lbs.

That said, in regards to the neck wood, @MascisMan , I agree the wenge neck is amazballs, however, depending on your tonal preferences and such there may be a better and conveniently a lighter option for you.
For something brighter and snappier the roasted ash maybe a superb option, or for a more mid open content maple is still tha bomb. Perhaps Ovangkol for something a bit more sultry and woody?!?
Wenge… articulate, focussed, punchy.

I’ve also heard others rave about the roasted ash neck. Currently deciding if my custom will be wenge or roasted ash. I change my mind weekly. I put in my custom deposit with JFB in June 2023 and the estimate was about a year. Let’s see if that holds.

Had my first fly dates since the pandemic began.. was so nervous about having to check my NG3 after seeing a recent Norwood Fisher post regarding a broken headstock after a flight. Bass showed up fine, lets just hope she makes it home with me today, lolol.. Im using a Sadowsky Portabag, seems to be working well so far.

The piece of mind is nice. Throw some air tags in your battery compartments or under the control cavity as well and you can watch your basses come with you… or not!!!!

I have the Glock in my ABI. Nothing bad about the DGTC but I think the Glock just works great with the AB series.

I’ve been doing fly dates with my SJ in a Gruv Gear Bass Kapsule. It’s been great. On one flight the TSA opened the case, inspected it, put their mandatory paper inside that says they searched my belongings, and it still made it back just fine every time. Highly recommended. They’ve been out of stock at most retailers for a while, but last I checked Musician’s Friend still had at least one in stock. My guitarist uses the guitar version as well, and even took his from the US to Italy, then France, and back to the US without issue.

Wow.. i didnt know those existed. I want to check one of those out.. I was impressed with how solid the Enki stuff is, but it would be nice to do a head to head comparison with the Kapsule in person somehow. Wonder if i can make that happen.. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah good luck trying to get anything out of Gruvgear xD They literally get annoyed with you if you have a question or ghost you and don't reply. Love their strap though...
