Thanks to all who commented on my Flats question! Seems like TI is the way to go. I use the 4 string set on my Fender, so Thomastik strings aren't totally new to me. I just never used the 5 string set before and was a little concerned about the .136 B string - quite a step from the .096 E string. But when you guys say it's fine, it's fine.

Not only is it fine, but, in my experience, it's awesome! The low tension of the TIs makes the added heft less of an issue when playing, IMO. Good luck!

I put TI flats on both Super and AB Dingwalls. On the five strings, I needed shorter saddle screws on the B strings. Occasionally, the E string would need the same thing. The screws it came with would bottom out before I was happy with the set up. Not a huge deal, you can find the stainless cap heads at most well stocked hardware stores. Less than a buck each.

The standard length five string set works for the Supers. The longscale AB-1’s needed a set with mixed lengths, and Jason at FretNation set me up.

I wasn’t a huge fan of that whopping .136 B string, (or low Bs in general) so the five strings ended up E-C. The six string AB was magic with TI flats, B-G.

I found I could switch between TI flats and DR pure Blue rounds .040 sets with very little set up messing around. When the round wound mood strikes…

DR Pure Blues are my fav round wounds. I have the 45-125 set on the Super P right now. Love them. But I got a feeling that with TI Flats I'd love the Super even more. We'll see.

Jason at fretnation will do a mixed set of TIJF’s?

I am building a 5 string fretless with reverse headstock and will probably need longer B and E strings because of how far out those tuners are.

I like the Payson flats. Easy, drop in fit with the tapered ball ends.

A new favorite round wound set is the Payson nickels on my AB-1 four string. Payson helped me with up a super light set up. He has lots of different gauges besides the standard sets. Just ask. Payson is a great resource for Dingwall users.

What gauges are you running on your AB-1?

This set up hit the spot for my light and low. If I switch to the Super P with TI flats, the TI’s feel stiffer. So if you like light, low, plus slapping and bending, these will suit.

They work great on the Dbird as well.

Tonally, DR Pure Blues are quite close to EB Slinky nickel rounds, but with smoother highs, not quite as agressive. They are very smooth under the fingers, too.

Been considering getting another 5 string combustion to replace my 4 string to be a back up to my main 5 string. Has anyone had any luck making the change easy? Figure I could possibly try and find someone wanting to downgrade to a 4 string and maybe make a straight trade or suck it up and buy a 5 string then sell the 4. Anyone looking for a 4 string combustion?

Cleanup, I assume some deoxit stuff. Works perfectly now.
