Dingwall Owners Club

Thanks for the help guys!

Got the pickup in and its working. Hoping to dial it in a bit before rehearsal tonight. I set it to the same height as the prior FD3N (though I am sure I will need to tweak). Not sure I will have a chance to really dial it in before rehearsal though.

Is there a general consensus on the P-Tone height-wise? Preferred lower or higher?

Hey everyone!
Last month I ran a "Git Gud" challenge. It was just a thing I did for a close group of folks to simply log our practice time on a group spreadsheet, support each other, talk through difficult things, lots of encouragement, and a slight little bit of competitiveness.

I'm running it again this month, but opening it up to a much wider audience. I don't want it to really be a talkbass-wide thing, but, I'd like to see if folks here would be interested in doing it?

There's no real requirements. If you want to participate, it'd just be putting your time up on a spreadsheet. I'm hoping folks will continue building a community through interactions on it as well. Post videos. Talk through what you're working on. Show off something you learned. But the guiding light is just to actually practice, and end the month better than it began.

If you're interested, I'd encourage you to just put your name on the March spreadsheet, here:
March '24 Git Gud Challenge

I just ask to keep it to this thread, not broadcasted to TB as a whole.
I'm definitely one of those people that needs accountability for practicing (and honestly most things). Especially since I'm not in an active project at the moment. I added my name to the sheet. This is actually great timing as I've got a new interface coming tomorrow.

EDIT: Might be cool to add a column for "What, if anything specific, are you practicing or what are your goals this month?"

Should be fine the same height as your others to start with, you'll probably get a big volume drop moving from that P-tone to the next selection though. That's how my ABZ is

Glad to hear you're in for it! :)

I have thought about putting more into the spreadsheet like that, but, I think at least for now, I'm hoping those kinds of discussions and thoughts would be more community driven. So like maybe tonight or tomorrow people can post about what their goals and such are, then throughout the month post progress, struggles, or if they change things up.

Larger aside... I really want to build this into a community overall, but, that's long term thinking. Eventually a website to do it rather than a janky spreadsheet, maybe an (optional!) phone app, and so on.

this is a really cool idea and would be great motivation. I currently have none. I walked away from my last project and honestly am taking a break from anything committal with bass for now… hopefully it’s just for now.
Other aspects of life are calling me in forceful manners.
If time frees up and music calls me back in a more forceful manner I’d be interested in signing on then.

Well, wish me luck. Dropped my Z3 off earlier to the tech I've been working with to install a custom 6 way rotary from Jason at Fret Nation (he was super helpful!) and series / parallel switches direct from Dingwall (both tech and sales were great and also really helpful).

May the wiring go well and the switches be installed in good spots with no finish cracking etc issues during the drilling and work!

I did fix them. They're all equal distance from the body, just a small gap between them and the body.

Now, dwall collective - how do I deal with this?

I don’t know if you can get it where you live, but look for the Sheldon-approved spray lubricant CAIG DeoxIT D5S-6. It’s 15 bucks USD and every player should have some anyway. It’s a well-known and highly regarded electronics cleaner. There’s other brands and types but they can actually harm guitar electronics so the CAIG DeoxIT is the only one I recommend.

Use the little straw to carefully squirt it into the divot above where it says ALPHA on the pots, so it gets inside the casing. Try not to get any on the finish. Once it’s in there, rotate the pots back and forth at least 2-3 dozen times to clean and lubricate the wipers in the pots. This almost always gets rid of electronic noise issues when played through an amp, although this is not the big concern here.

The continuing concern is that my Dingwall’s pots are absolutely silent when turned, just like any other quality pots that are working normally. Yours almost sound like there’s metal shavings or sand in them - more of a deeper mechanical issue either way. Outside chance of this happening if you’re located by the ocean. Can’t really tell if there’s gain on the Youtube audio that might make it sound worse than it is. The vigorous De-Oxit cleaning might help in that case otherwise replacement will be necessary.

No clue where to get deoxit in the EU. I will look into this. Btw there is 0 noise when playing and plugged in, it's just mechanically bad. When I got the bass, it was dirty. I wonder what the previous owner did or where they lived.

Little Friday refresh complete! Little upgrades feel great so far. D-roc selector is a nice upgrade. Jury is still out on the preamp—put the dg tone capsule in and so far I kinda miss the EMG. I have an ng3, so I’ll probably swap it back to have more options.

Id ask helge at Glockenklang about that preamp. If it operates fine without any electronic noise perhaps it’s something you live with otherwise you may be looking at a new preamp or at least the pots and volume pot. IIRC your bass and mid pots have the preamp attached?

Depending on the damage too you may not be getting a full range of sweep on the concerning pots.

the only normal sounding knobs were the treb and selector.

Hey thanks Mr BK. I’m not planning on going anywhere. I still love the instrument and all it encompasses. I’ve just found I wasn’t happy with the direction of my last project and my quest to lock in with the right band and focussing, committing hours and playing hard for said band isn’t the best usage of my time right now.

I’ll still play but for now it will be very casually. I’ll still ogle all the gear and enjoy all that music brings but currently both physical and mental health, happiness, exploring and adventure have become a more valued priority. Maybe after travelling for a few years I’ll try again.

Despite my recent resignation I look at all my gear as I contemplate downsizing….. Nope. Not much for sale yet. Seems I still have justification to hold onto 8 or so basses. Heheh.

You take a break, I'll hop in in your place with all of my nonsense (:

Glad you'll still be on TB.

Haha. Thx Kat!
I’ve enjoyed your contribution and involvement since you showed up with your similar interests and your Rad videos!

Looking forward to some more cover vids with some of your newer gear and I’ll still attempt to be a devil on your shoulder as you’re lookin to spend more $$$ on your set up!

I was thinking I may tackle something easy like Tool when I get back to spending some more time in the music room and see if I can rock the mood the way your vids do.
Only recently I acknowledged how much of an influence they were on my when I was younger and realized I never learned any of their music. Heck, I just watch Justin chancellors rig run down and followed that up with hitting up the classifieds for a Wal. :banghead:
Don’t worry, I’m not going far….and I seriously doubt I’ll ever get a Wal….. unless it’s a DING-Wal(l)

Ok. I’ll see myself out now.

One thing I can suggest for the Darkglass TC is to add a passive tone control that's always in circuit. I did this with a non-Dingwall project and it really allows you to shape the top end in ways you can't with the TC alone. It's not the same as a dedicating active treble control, but at least gives you the ability to cut some highs when you want.
