After swapping FDVs for SF2s in my SJ I can’t say that I agree with these assessment of at least those two pickups. Maybe this works in very broad terms but the visual doesn’t align with my experience.
It doesn't account for the other factors like pickup positioning, combination with other pickups, etc.
I wonder if you were hearing more highs due to them being a bit smoother sound and less mid presence. They are supposed to be less mid sounding compared to the other options which could give you a bit more “ting” up top?
My experience with the FDVs have presented my ears with the least amount of lows on the FDVs vs other options. I’ve found them lacking the tight low end attack and presence compared to other models which is what steered me away from them except on the fretless.
Really, I don’t really call your exact experience but I though I remembered you not liking the FD3 due to a mid bark
and the SF2s smoothed and thickened things up compared to your FDVs No?

I’ve never owned a bass with FD3s. Just FDVs and now SF2s. I find the SF2s to be considerably more even than what this graphic suggests with a clearer top end than the FDVs.
Since you can’t remove those factors in any bass that would render the graphics useless. I suspect Dingwall’s intention for these is more of an average presentation across their basses.
All this pickup talk has me wanting to try different pickups in the AB1.

I guess it was someone else talking about the FD3s in that regard then… or one of the voices in my head.
I’m guessing your experience with that may just be related to the mid cut on the SF2s compared to the FDVs.
Dingwall pick ups are always so open in the mid section that by making that cut on the SF2 I assume is what allows that top end to present clearer
Yes, that would be a good explanation, perhaps also (and relatedly) perceiving a higher volume of "highs" when in fact i was just hearing a bit more highs extension (finger noise stood out on SFiis) uncluttered by mids?
On paper, for my SJ5XXX, it would be F3 neck, FV middle, and Fattie bridge.
The graphics do make me very curious to try a P-Tone in the middle position sandwiched between my two SF2s.
I'm a big fan of the FD3s. Love those mids on the bridge pickup.
I’d love to sandwich a P tone in between 2 dual humbuckers on my six strings.
FD3s are my happy place until, if ever, that can happen

Wasn’t there a recently reported issue (magnet interference of some sort) and a recommendation to not place P-tones in the mid position?
